I like to boil a pudding on the day before a trek. Keep it in the cloth. Sliced and fried for breakfast and just warmed for dinner. Light and lots of calories
Two cups flour, half a pound of butter, raisins, jigger or so of rum or brandy, salt, nutmeg, wrapped in a cloth and boiled about three hours.
Anyone else use a pudding on the trail?
And if you want a quickie, hardtack break to crumbs, butter rum raisins, boiled for an hour or so
Good eats on the trail.

Can't say as I've done any historic trekking but I'd sure give that recipe a go.
