Here’s another Fusil De Chasse smoothbore target. Standing, offhand, loading from the pouch. Tough shoot getting eaten alive by mosquitoes. At one shot I had several on the barrel in my sight picture and one sitting on top of the front sight. Good test of concentration 😉. [ Invalid Attachment ]

What about those 3x's Rob? High scores so far this month. I just don't have enough eyes to watch everybody. Shot my Mike Fink target today with a Renegade with a Green Mt. barrel on it. [ Invalid Attachment ]

Seems as if everyone is in a rush to shoot them targets this month.
 Enthusiasm is high it is.
Good to see, I'll try in the next few days.  100 yarder too.
 Nice Shooting folks.

I was very satisfied with the GPR the day I shot the bullseye target. But if I was trying to shoot a rope off, or cut a playing card on edge, in half, all 5 of those shots would have missed. The playing card drives me batty. The last shoot we had, I got to shoot at the rope and playing card. I got lucky and shot the rope off, but just put a smudge on the back edge of the card. So that means there's room for improvement.

I forget the story behind the Mike Fink target. Is the cup on Fink's head, or the other guys head. Refresh my memory someone. Is there a riverboat involved? Irregardless, he has avoided being injured thus far.

Explain to me how that target is 26 pts.

Tom, as you might imagine, alcohol was heavily involved in the original event, as you might well imagine.
I believe the fellow with the cup on his head is the other guy, but I could be wrong.
No riverboats were injured in the production of this event.
Of course, It is entirely possible that I have everything I just said wrong.  It's been a long time since I thought about the details.
A side note to this event.  Years ago at the Coeur d'Alene rendezvous, probably in the 1980's somewhere, I decided to put on a Mike Fink shoot.  Instead of using a paper target, I fashioned a "body" out of 2x4's, put a 1" dowel in the top crossmember with a styrofoam wig head on the dowel.  I dressed the guy with an old flannel shirt I had and drew a face on the wig head with a magic marker.  Oh yes, I put a wig on top of the head as well.  I thought it turned out pretty good for a person of my limited artistic abilities.  Instead of going broke buying tin cups, I just used old canned vegetable tins for the cup.  Unbeknownst to anyone at the shoot, I had hollowed out the head and filled a plastic sandwich bag with tomato sauce and canned tomatoes and placed that into the cavity.  The can was filled with water, to simulate whiskey.  I just waited for someone to miss the can and shoot low.  To my great disappointment, nobody did.  Rats!  Going to prove, the best laid plans of mice and men often go awry.
I really wanted to shoot at it with my Brown Bess, but it was my novelty shoot so I couldn't participate.  I had that guy standing in my garage for quite a while.  I guess I finally took it apart and used the lumber for something else.  But that doesn't mean you guys couldn't duplicate this and have fun with it at your rondy.

There is a 10 and an 8 and two 4's.  That equals 26.  The upper part of the cup that is only partially showing is a 4.  The 5th shot inside the handle is a 0.
Not bad shooting with a pistol.

That's a great story John. I too am sorry that nobody shot low. I bet that would have been the highlight of your day, and would have made all that work more rewarding. It would have been neat to see also. Too bad you don't have a picture of your creation. And by the way, you're right about being some good shooting with a pistol.

Yep good shooting for a pistol

Kevin,  That low shot might have scattered the tomatoes and tomato sauce.
With all this cut the line BS on the scoring, I am a bit confused as to whether that low shot is a -10 or a +10.  Considering the scores increase from the top down, 4, 6, 8, 10,-10, it feels like it should be a -10, but if the cut line goes to the next higher score, then it is a +10.
I think that one calls for a judgement from the match director
Those two 8 count hits are great.  Keep those coming!

I wondered about the low shot too but went with split the line , higher score thing.
Not concerned either way. It is what it is .

Kevin, go to page 2 on the Postal Shoots thread. The 3rd one down entitled Scoring Mike Fink target. Nessmuk was answering a question for 49er, and included a paragraph that pertains to your questions. It sounds as though, even after parting the gentleman's hair, if you have knocked the cup off, you receive 10 pts.

I was hoping Mr fink had a top knot. Would hate to crack his noggin.
 I'll take the 10.

I'm partial to those Renegades and Hawkens. They'll  Get-R-Done if you know what I mean. I was glad to see you had submitted your targets. Seems as though after that mad rush to get our targets sent in, it came to a screeching halt. I thought we had all the July entries we were going to get. But I think life is getting in the way, and we'll see some more targets come in.

Well I wanted to shoot this again to improve my poor score. But with all the rain we’re getting I can’t get to the range on the muddy road. And I’m running out of time.
So here it is.

Friends , here are my Postal Target submissions. Unlike EVERYONE else this month I shot SUPPORTED (Elbows on Table). So don't think my shooting has magically Improved, I'm just owning up to my physical infirmities (Cataracts, left arm, left shoulder and right hip Arthritis.  20 years of crawling in and around Aircraft has taken it's toll, I really should have taken that desk job a few years earlier.

Not that it matters any at all, but I am wondering about your scoring.
On the Mike Fink shoot, that low 10 cut the line of the bottom of the cup.  So, should that not have been a -10?
Stuff like this is what makes me think this cutting the line is a bunch of, what's the word I am looking for?  Something about male, bovine excrement?  Well, maybe baloney would work instead.
I realize that as a non-participant I have absolutely no say-so in the scoring methods used, but as a person that has shot firearms for virtually all of his 78 years (I have a vague recollection of shooting a rifle when I was about 3), and competitively since I was in my early 20's, I do have opinions.
Personal opinion is all this is.

Hey Dave, at least you are on the backer!  I tried again this morning and when the smoke cleared, I couldn't find a round ball hole anywhere!  :hairy

Then I shot the July target, nothing to write home about.  Likewise Mike Fink; both targets have been PMed to Nessmuk so I'll let him post them here.  Let me say though, that old Mike died twice under my care....  :luff:

Well, maybe I'll do better in August.

Well your left n right looks good 👍.
As far as my line split on the 10 /-10 I will take the -10 if that's the fair thing to do.  Fun remember.
Should we have a ball wholly in the ring to count rule ??

For your information, Winter hawk got a positive 4 on Mike Fink. That's a heck of a lot better than my first Mike Fink effort which was an embarrassingly high negative number. To be honest, when I shoot Mike Fink I cover his face and just shoot at the cup. it seems to work for me. Something about that ugly mug  just attracts all my shots if I can see it.

It's definitely a challenging target. And Marks score of 48 is probably the highest score ever submitted. Way to go Mark. If I could have lowered my shots, I would have been happy. But I have a bad habit of dropping things. Including my shots. So I try to stay away from his forehead. But it doesn't always work. And Kees, cover his face like Mark and see if it makes a difference.

Post by: dmarsh on July 31, 2024, 10:27:21 AM
I have the same problem.  Will have to try covering the face as well.  My first two shots are way high in an effort to not hit the face.   ;banghead;

Thanks for all the positive comments, guys.  :toast I'll try again next year, if God be willing and the creeks don't rise....

Is it allowed to cover the whole target with a paper with a smaller aiming point over where you want the bullet to hit?  I think that might be of help for me.  On the other hand, maybe I am beyond help!   :luff:
