Post by: Ohio Joe on January 04, 2017, 05:31:33 PM
Just a heads up everyone. Our Annual "Mike Fink" shoot for July 2017 is now open, so start gathering your Team Partner.

Post your two person Team in this thread. I will consolidate the list.

This is a free shoot which is open to TMA members who are on or off our website,,, and guest non members who are on our website). You will need a shooting partner as this is a two person team shoot.

Those who sign up for our Silhouette Match have a copy of the Mike Fink Target included in their packet -  all others will have to run a copy from our "Target" section here on our website. The target you will use is here; http://traditionalmuzzleloadingassociat ... /MF-TC.pdf (http://traditionalmuzzleloadingassociation.org/TMA-Targets/MF-TC.pdf)

Our Annual Mike Fink Shoot is a free shoot. (Please shoot only one target to turn in, and let the balls hit where they may.

Lets get this rolling;

TMA Sight Rules Apply
Two Person Teams (Be sure to put your screen name on your target)
Mike Fink Match Shot In July

Scoring will be - (You Must Break The "Scoring Line Completely" To Receive The Higher Score Value) NOTE: Outer Scoring Lines That Are Thicker Then The Inner Scoring Lines Should Be Viewed As Thinner Lines (from the outside - And In Some Situations From The Inside Line) When Scoring Them... A Ball That Is Half or Better In The Head From The Bottom Line Of The CUP Will Be Scored As A MINUS TEN (-10)...  There May Be Situations With The Scoring That Requires The "Match Scorer" To Make A Judgement Call Of Shot Placement On The Mike Fink Target... A Judgement Call Is Not Open To Debate, Nor Is The Scoring System Of The Mike Fink Target Open For Debate. (ALL MIKE FINK TARGETS ARE SCORED THE SAME)

Two anchors just might win us something in the "Most Pitiful" category.
Well, why don't ya make it innerestin and have the two 'anchors' shoot standing in the middle of the wide Missouri, the buckskins will dry out eventually.

i don't think it'll matter much if stand 5 yards from the target let alone take a missouri dip, i'm still gonna be an anchor of sorts.  :lol

as far as i'm concerned, and clearly from my perspective, all matches/shoots/events are NOT about winning or losing, they're about having *FUN*, both in the form of good natured camaraderie and having a goal to go out and shoot something more than the breeze or the bull.

This man Lynn (greyhunter) has a very large footprint with his past and present doings within the TMA, and even more importantly a man of very strong personal character, if he tells you it's going to rain, you'd better prepare to get yourself wet!

Question for you on the Mike Fink shoot from a first time shooter.  This is similar to the postal matches where each member of the team shoots their own target and sends it in individually.  Is that right?

That's real ranger country. :wave  Mighta had one them thar metal detector thingies. Go prospecting fer goodies. I found a red clay pipe bowl by luck onetime (14 yo). I was playing baseball in the Hannastown, PA area, and found it in the river loom infield dirt brought there from Monessen, PA where 'twas dredge up from the Monongahela River. On of our members in the Rangers of the Ohio Company is an Archeologist by profession. He checked it out and pronounce it, "Now, that's a pipe!" 250-275 years ripe.
Here's a pic of it ( red one in center without a stem):

Dave,
Iffen you can put up with a guy who's "blind in one eye & don't see too well out of the other" and is also a newbie on this site, I'd be proud to shoot alongside of you.  Don't guarantee I'll hit anything, but I'll burn powder anyway...  Oh, and I do stretch the truth a bit - the great state of Ohio allows me to drive without my glasses, although this driving by brail does get hard on the old pickumup truck... :laffing   :laffing

We have a good number of teams with 8 teams, this little event should be good for many laughs, it always has been, even with a few smaller numbers of shooters!

Poor ol' Mike ain't going to have a chance this year. With this many shooters someone is bound to him good!

Instead of him shutting his eyes (or eye) when I shoot, I'm a gonna shut mine! 'sides. he won't see it coming and I won't see it going! - A man's gotta have a plan in this game... ;)

I printed out my Mike Fink target, and for some reason it fit on an 81/2 by 11 sheet of paper. Maybe I need to check my printer settings, as I was hoping for something about the size of a barn door.  :lol sign

Sounds like my kind of target!  :toast
I have always heard that "Itty-bitty targets makes ya all nervous and shaky,  while big ol' targets make ya brave and bold"...don't know if that is true or not, but it sounds good to me.

Okay, where are we at with the Mike Fink shoot?  Anybody turn in any targets yet?  I'm trying to get some time to go shoot it, but my Sweetie just had some major surgery and I need to stick close to home for a while...

WH, as long as your target is post marked by August 15th - I will except it.

My best to your wife for a speedy recovery my friend!

Winter Hawk my friend, my heart goes out to ya brother!  :bow

I am experiencing that exact same problem.
It really chaps my back side not to able to get out and shoot some targets, especially right now, but a man does have some obligations that just can't be ignored, and caring for a sickly spouse that can't care for herself right now, is right up on top of that very high list.

Hopefully, by the grace of God, this too shall come to pass....but you hang tight my friend, and I will do the same....our day is coming.
And when that day gets here, it's going to be like a day of revenge from all the pent up frustrations.
I can almost "smell' it happening now

Joe, Uncle Russ, thank you both for the kind words.

Carol is doing very well, saw the doctor on Monday for a post-op and the doc is very pleased with how she is healing.  She just isn't supposed to lift anything over ten pounds and needs to spend as much time as possible in bed.  Running down and up the stairs more than two times per day is also on the verboden list for now.

It's a good thing that I have a handle on putting together chow for us, even if it may be some strange combinations!  :laffing

I should be able to put five rounds into that guy's face by the end of the month.  Hope he doesn't spill the whiskey on the way down!

We are swamped with zucchini and I've been cutting it small, throwing it in olive oil in the hot frying pan with seasoning salt, Italian seasoning, and garlic powder and stir frying it. Once it's done I add an egg and stir it all around until the egg is done, and sprinkle Parmesan cheese over all.  She really likes that, and it's quick & easy.

Tried cooking the zucchini in tomato sauce I made last year (got to use that up so I have jars for this year!) and that was a flop.  She wants it cooked the other way!   :laffing  Good thing she likes PBJs, because that is lunch most days....

WH..........My dear old Grandmother informed me at a very early age that Chicken Soup was good for the Soul, and PBJ would for certain make ones bones stronger.
So far, according to Grandma, you're doing pretty good.

However, she also assured me that a change in diet, and a fairly often change at that, was one of the best things you could do to make a person smile.

Keep yer spouse smiling, it's best fer the both of you, according to Grandma, and Grandma was never wrong.....

Winter Hawk,  just got back from the wilds of Vermont with no Internet or cell access.  First time on the site in a couple of weeks.  Sorry to hear about your your wife but I see she is on the mend which is great.  I have not shot my target as yet and left my packet up in Vermont so will have to print one off.  Will be getting it  done next week.  Again glad you wife is doing well.  Best of luck.

Went out today and shot my target....

I sure hope Dave can get five "tens" and rescue our team, 'cause my hits were a tad high.  Now I'm not taking the blame exactly; I think that feller under the tin cup bobbed his head down whenever he saw my finger tighten on the trigger!  :Doh!  And that's a fact!

Notice that one was so high it just barely grazed the paper.  This after I shot five rounds at another target and all the shots hit an inch or so low, except for one which actually hit my piece of black tape.  After four shots at old Mike (or his partner, I'm not sure who's cup we're shooting at) I lost count and walked over to check the target.  That's when I realized I needed to hold low and which accounts for my one "ten".  So it looks like we have 20 points to now.  Go Dave!  :laffing

~WH~

P.s. The target is in the mail, Joe!

I shot mine yesterday as well.  I hate to disappoint you but I sure didn't get 5 tens.  :Doh!  I did get 2 tens, 2 sixes and a 4 for a 32 I believe pending Joe's review.  I think Mike was weaving and bobbing on me as well.  I shot a warm up target with a nice big orange bulls eye in the middle and hit the orange all 5 times.  Then I put Mike up and my group opened right up.  Maybe a bit nervous as I didn't want to kill the poor guy.  So I think we are at 52.  We will have to see what the others do.  Here's to you partner. :toast

Rob, you're going to be downright proud to have me as your partner today!

One of the better Mike Fink targets I have ever shot!

I stayed inside the cup, and I didn't hit Ol' Mike.......it don't get no mo beta than that!!!
I dearly love that L&R Rpl Lock!

A lot of folks will tell you that the lock is no more than just a part of the gun, and it's all in the barrel.

I suspect I may have said those very same words a time or two myself, but after my shooting today, which was the first 'serious' shooting I've done since installing that new lock, I will have to say I prefer Ketchup and Tartar Sauce on my Crow, when I have to eat it!

Just wait until you see my "Smoothbore" target!
(Both barrels are on the same platform with the L&R Lock, in fact, that's a 4 barrel set-up... full length bedding, with 13" "kick bar" to strengthen the platform and replacing the old trigger and trigger guard....I think it's kinda neat!)

(http://i.imgur.com/m1e8Ty2.jpg) (http://imgur.com/m1e8Ty2)

Here is the "Kick Bar"...it's my own design and made to strengthen that well recognized "weak spot" on the Renegade wrist. Besides that it does away with that whirly / swirly trigger guard that T/C used on everything.
 (http://i.imgur.com/6rhqR44.jpg) (http://imgur.com/6rhqR44)

Here is the L&R Lock with the .56 Smoothie barrel....
The lock is still in the 'raw' as I have not blued it yet, and you can still see the marks from the magic marker on the mortice...I've been tinkering with the bedding, ie the CY you sent me, and then Acra-glass...you don't have a lot of working room once you fit the L & R Lock, and I darn sure don't want to have to go back and re-do something later on down the road....I think we all feel about the same way when we are involved in a project, ie, get it right the first time, still yet  this has been an ongoing project for well over a year now, while I just haven't had the opportunity to get out and check it out well enough.
I was very pleased with todays results!

Russ, I have an L&R John Bailes Cap & Flintlock Lock (Locks) I switch out on occasions with one of my rifles, and I have to say these two locks have the smoothest release I've ever experienced with any lock. I've been tinkering with the idea of changing out my "stock" GPR flintlock with an L&R, and one of these times I might just do that.

Nice shooting my friend!  :hairy

Joe, as I have often said in the past, a lock is a lock, and a necessary part of the rifle...it's all in the barrel.

Today I found out differently!

If you have a really good barrel, the best way to the most out of that barrel is to pair it with a good lock.

I have owned several different good locks, and good barrels over time, that were matched up by someone else.
Today happened by accident, in a sense.

I have a very old T/C Renegade that has been a 'work in progress' for no less that 15 plus years, probably closer to 25..
As a stock, out of the box, smooth rifle, it was always exceptional, as far as I'm concerned.
I have never shot groups with that rifle that I could say that was just plain bad....like some other smoothbores I have owned, and even own today.

Plus, I've never shot 'groups' with any of the other smooth bores that would even come close.
From day-one, I found it very forgiving.
It would shoot just about anything I could get down the barrel, and do a pretty good job of doing so.

As the years went by, it was one thing then another trying to use the Renegade platform to get a good shooting rifle, mostly because I've always liked the English Sporting Rifle, and I wanted the Renegade to look as much like one as possible.

The last thing I installed was the L&R lock.
It had never been fully tested until today, and I have to say I was very happy with what I found.

In my entire shooting life, I have never given a lot of thought to 'lock time' on any muzzleloader I have ever owned, and I have owned a bunch.
But after today.......what can I say?  Some of the most consistent shots I have ever fired in my entire life, once I figured out where the shot was breaking....

Life is good, once again!!

Uncle Russ...

Amazing shooting,  Uncle Russ!  Looks like it was you who were on fire today!  :bow

:lol sign :bow...Yep, I was on today, and Yep, there is fire all around us...nothing in town yet, or even real close.....and that must be seen as a good thing.

Just hope I can do that same thing tomorrow, or next week.....maybe a couple of times next month?
Seemed like I could do no wrong today, but I have to tell you ya John, that new L&R Lock had a whole heck of a lot to do with it.

When that sight picture is just right,  and the gun fires almost on it's own, you can bet that shot is going to be very near where you called it. And that is all in the difference of the locks.

There was noting wrong with the old T/C lock, it's just that the L&R is so much above it, in real lock time and it's smooth as butter, releasing at just at 2lbs on my trigger scale.

Thanks for the kind words John, if I can just keep doing this I'll be just as happy as a Pig in slop!

We'll see. I am planning another Range trip soon.
If I can do this two, three, times right out the gate, I will be one happy Camper!  :toast

i've got an L&R RPL05 flint lock hanging around that's destined to go in the latest GPR.

Thanks for the very kind words, Rob

I can not think of a better place for that new lock to go!
I have long felt that the very best, fresh out of the box, Rifle, I have ever shot was a GPR....hands down! Gawd! I still remember that day and how pleased I was.

However my own targets from yesterday reveal something that I was guilty of never given much  thought to, and that was locks.
A lock is a lock, is a lock, is a .........you get the picture.
Yesterday proved that thought dead wrong. After all, except for the lock, that was the exact same rifle I have been shooting for years!

Why would anyone change out a perfectly good lock?
It did it's job, then it was up to me to learn its characteristics, if it made a spark, or busted a cap every time you pulled the trigger, that lock was working just fine, and no one questions its performance. T least I never did!

Well, there's a bit more to it than just that.

It's very difficult to explain, and it's something I'm still in awe of....you have to experience it to realize the difference....and, if you're like me, it will take no more than just a few shots before you realize something is very different....is this the same gun? Is this my old gun?
Then, after you catch on, it's like shooting a totally different gun, but yet you feel familiar with it.

Very hard to explain, so I'll just leave and let you tell me after you get the new L&R.

Both barrels used yesterday were T/C Barrels that been shot a lot, pounds and pounds of powder have gone through these guns over the years, it has been a passion, something I love to do, and I have always recognize that that Smooth Rifle as a very exceptional shooter.....as most .56 Smooth Rifles are, albeit I'm more convinced than ever that the rear sight plays a tremendous role in all this.

After all, they were designed to shoot PRB, and then shot when need be, simply by its nature of having no rifling.
Unlike the Smooth bores which were designed to shoot shot, and then a PRB if need be, simply by their nature of having no rifling.
But look at the difference in the thickness of those barrels!

And, don't you ever worry about that broken cog, or trying to do better, that ain't what this is about at all!
These shoots are for having fun, trying new things, and getting better with the old technology that we use and seem to love.

Stay safe my friend!

Uncle Russ...

it's all about lock time.  i think the GPR locks are good ones.  i do think they can be improved for speed by taking them apart and doing the prescribed truing and polishing of the plate, polishing of the moving parts, and a very light bearing surface oiling.  the after-market locks of L&R, davis, siler, etc are trued and polished better than the assembly line GPR lock ... but again, the GPR lock can be improved for sure - IF need be.
