Title: a new smoothie
Post by: RobD on February 08, 2017, 06:43:37 PM
a few months back i commissioned jackie brown to build me a po' boy barn gun smoothbore in 20ga/.62 bore.  a very very plain long gun, with plain maple stock, and the only furniture in iron being a pair of rod thimbles and trigger guard - no muzzle cap, entry pipe, or butt plate.   the OTR 42" barrel and all the iron is left as-is, no browning or bluing.  the lock is an L&R queen anne, the trigger is of jackie's making and the touch hole liner is a chamber's white lightening.  this is as no-frills a long gun as one can get, but with good components and wood.  total weight is 6lbs 15ozs.

i wrapped a new english black flint i leather and she sparks quite nicely, as expected.

the cost of this gun, to my door, was more than fair, and a far better bargain than some of the "better" offshore guns from investarms and pedersoli.

now to take it all apart, whisker the wood, LMF stain,TOTW linseed oil, load and shoot it.  lots more to come with all that, for sure.

well, the "jackie gun" is as done as can be, at least for now.  after 4 or 5 light wipes of warm TOTW original oil (linseed + dryers), with 24 hour curing, i gave the stock 3 light wipes of tru-oil varnish.  all wipes had 0000 wool light buffing between coats.  last tru-oil coat was also wool buffed and then a coat of johnson's carnuba car wax was rubbed on and off.  not too bad.  there was a *LOT* of work required to fix "issues" and make it at least presentable and hopefully shootable.  we'll see.  the metal will be left as-is, no browning or bluing, it'll patina all on its own as was typically done back in the day, particularly with these far cheaper "barn guns".

:Doh! you both are bannished from my fire until   mine arrives :)
The turtle sight wasn't on it, however was replaced by a bladed sight. JB is sending me my turtle. The gun took me 3 weeks to get, one week behind. (no complaint)
The serpent and guard didn't fit well against the stock, but I did some minor file work and they fit now.
The wormy wood stock is beautiful. Once I oiled the gun down, the beauty came thru. The lock was crisp and tight. It sparks like a bygawd. Now for what I paid, to get an American made gun, and from a known builder, I'm tickled pink. Our "hobby" is expensive when you become a flinter whore, but it could have been a lot more. (the warden didn't flinch).
All in all... I had a good experience. I'd deal with JB again. I just need to research gun soldering.

Hi I'm Brad... I'm a flinter whore  :)

This is the stuff for soldering on front sights, super easy to use with a propane torch.

The picture shows my first tube of the stuff with copper in it, my next purchase was the same low temp silver solder without the copper.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v181/ekrewson/beck%20rifle/solderpaste.jpg) (http://http)

To put on your front sight you first put a piece of sandpaper over your barrel grit up and run the sight back and forth over the sandpaper to get the sight base perfectly matching the barrel curvature.

Next put a triangle file on a flat surface, with your barrel resting on the top barrel flat , drag the barrel across the triangle file. This will make a perfectly centered line to use as an alignment reference for placing your sight.

Put some solder paste on your sight and hold it on the barrel with some kind of clamp aligning it with your previously marked center line. Heat the sight briefly until you see beads of solder melt and form around the sight and you are done.

In this picture I am doing the same procedure with a underlug on a fowler barrel.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v181/ekrewson/English%20Fowler/solderingonalug_zpsc1369981.jpg) (http://http)

You can see my file drag marked center line on the barrel. With a C clamp you can tap your sight or underlug around a little for alignment before you heat it and melt the solder.

Similar but you don't have to draw any solder into your joint because it is already there via the paste.

I bought the copper/ silver solder paste at Lowe's but couldn't find it the last time I was there. Rather than drive all over town looking for the stuff I ordered some off eBay, shipped free to may door.

I have also used it for adding metal to a trigger bar and adding metal for height to a front sight I filed too much on.

Don't worry about photobucket (I hates it, I do).  Check the software you use to download the photos from your camera for a resize function, then size the photo down to where it's not too big for this site.  Save it with another name Or just add a "1" to what it is already called ( so you still have the original in regular size).  Then on your post, scroll down to where it says "Allowed Extensions" and below that "Filename".  Click the "Browse..." button, go to the resized photo and double click on it.  A box comes up where you can add a comment about the photo, which you can ignore if you want.  Click on "Add the file" to the right of the comment box.  Browse to more photos if you need, same drill for them also.  Then click on "Submit" and you are done.

At least, that is how it works for me.     Hope this helps!

I got away with it a couple of times 40 years ago when we lived in Post Falls, ID.
After we moved to the mountains north and east of Hayden, ID shooting in the back yard was a pretty common happening.
Since we moved to Morron Bay, CA, I don't dare phart in the back yard.
