I have a lock marked Etienne lock that I have been trying to get details on for quite a while. Is this the right part of the forum to post this request?

Ok, have tried to attach photos, but notice says file is too big. can anyone square me away? Tried 4 photos too large tried 1 photo. Still too large. What next?

I'm not really up on how to post photo's through the site here. I know it can be done, however I have found that Imgur is very workable and easy to use, and doesn't cost a penny. :bl th up

Herbwf, Welcome to the forum!,its not how many pix but rather, the size of each individual. You have to resize each one before attaching them. I have some great referance books to look up info on this lock subject. Will check back later this morning, this is my" hit the hay " time.

The quick take is maybe a 1763 French musket STYLE lock. Lots more pictures needed front and back.
In the book, Colonial Frontier Guns by TM Hamilton, there is a discription with photos and dimensions.
No Etienne stamped on it but they are saying it is identical too a 1763, im assuming a period copy of that design. The article describes a couple other knowns that are also the same.

That style of double throated cock seems to me to be of a later era that 1760s. More like 1800 to 1820s? I am far from expert on this.

There ain't no fleas on Imgur. Easy to set up, easy to use. If you have it on your computer, Imgur can post on the web for you.

(Pick your own "Test photo" where you can easily recognize colors, clarity, motion, whatever, and never worry about sizing, resizing....it will do all that for you.)

Sorry this is off-topic for the lock in reference, but pictures are essential to help identify anything....words just don't do it sometimes, remember the "Worth a thousand words" saying?

When I was looking at that picture I did not even notice that detail. I believe the 1803 Harpers Ferry rifles had the double throated cock.

The Charlieville musket had double throat in the 1700's. But I dont know if it had a convex surface or if it was just flat. It does look a bit funky .
