Title: Buttonses
Post by: Spotted Bull on April 23, 2020, 10:11:17 PM
As I was digging through this little bag of buttons that I have, some with two holes and some with four holes, I started to wonder when the four hole buttons started to show up in the US. Are they correct for the Pre-1840 time period?

4-hole bone buttons date back to around 1760 in England.
Usually made of cow or pig bone, the raw material was soaked or steamed to
soften. It was then separated into sheets (thickness of the desired button), and a circular
saw was used to cut out and remove the button blanks. The blanks were then polished, and holes were drilled into the body to allow sewing onto garments.  :bl th up
