Title: Percussion Nipple Cover
Post by: PetahW on December 17, 2020, 08:05:43 PM
.

Well, Winter's here - and the dampness can cause ignition problems.

I use a leather piece between hammer & nipple when storing my capguns, but when hunting in wet weather, I use commercial cap keepers - What do others here use ?.

www.octobercountry.com/nipple-covers-replacement-nipples-o-rings/

I use this, i can keep the hammer down on the brass if i choose but with the O ring the cover stays in place.

I've been using what I call my "cone cover" that I've been making for the last 25+ years. I didn't know someone else had come up with the same idea. Anyway, they work.  :bl th up

I just use a spent .22 short case that fits over the nipple, then I lower the hammer down on it to keep it in place.

Yes sir, I've heard of this many a times. Any Rimfire cartridge (S, L, LR, Mag) with the latter three shaved back will work if one doesn't want to tinker around making one.  :bl th up

A short bit of aquarium hose of the correct diameter will work also.  Or, retrogress and shoot a flintlock!  :laffing :laffing :laffing

Kees, now that's not a bad idea! When I clean my caplocks I always put that little tight fitting clear hose over my nipple cone to flush out the barrel and it keeps the liquid away from the stock that way ('course the other end stays plugged until I'm ready to flush the barrel...

Now I never even considered using that as a nipple "cone" until you mentioned it here... Now of course my nipple is capped under my metal cone so I'm ready for a shot,,, but all in all - that's a darn good idea!  :bl th up

Not MY idea, I picked it up elsewhere & am just passing it along.  :bl th up

From the photo I saw, the piece of tubing fit over the edge of the cap to seal it to the nipple, but it was short enough to allow the hammer to strike the cap.  I'll have to try that myself some time.

Note to self: pick up some aquarium tube....  :laffing

I use an earplug on a string tied to the hammer. Comes off when its cocked.
