Title: Dead Fox
Post by: Oldetexian on January 27, 2021, 11:10:19 AM
I woke yesterday morning to find a dead Red Fox in the middle of my driveway. He (and it was definitely a male) had no signs of physical violence...just look like he keeled over while trotting across my drive.

My first thought was to skin him out, but I decided to call animal control to see if they would want to check him for rabies or distemper. The animal control office said due to budget cuts they could not test any animals unless there was a known interaction with pets, etc.

He told me I should wear gloves and double bag the fox and put him into the trash...so that is what I did...but have to admit I still would like to at least have that tail...

IMO it's best to play it safe,.... critters just don't naturally keel over and die in mid-stride.

Could it be a car hit/ injury/death?

The fox was in perfect shape with no sign of broken bones or messed up fur so I doubt it was hit by a car. Also, it was in my driveway behind my house away from the street.

I agree that discretion is the better part of valor when it comes to handling dead critters, especially if you do not personally administer the lead poisoning...

I don't know...   I'm to dumb to know better but if the fox showed no outward signs of disease . foam/ blood in mouth, diarrhea on the southbound fur. Missing patches of fur etc.
Then hell, I sure wouldn't eat it but I'd skin it. Atleast take the tail.
Wear gloves, salt it and let it sit a while.
If your spouse loves you , you can even use the washing machine.  Then salt it. :luff:
Maybe some kid in the neighborhood got a BB gun for Christmas.

What Kevin said.  I'd take the tail, even if that meant to stretch it out on a piece of wood and chop it off with an axe....

Ray, I've been thinking this since you posted, and I can't seem to get the image of a Chaparrel or Roadrunner, or maybe some Acme products, outta my mind.
Silly? Yes, of course, it's silly, but that's how my old mind rolls at times.  :Doh!
