Title: loading a matchlock
Post by: pipeguy66 on March 14, 2022, 02:22:06 PM
Hi All. Should receive my new unfired .72 smoothie matchlock in a week or so. Have never owned or even seen one so all new to me. I have seen several different vids on loading ….drop the ball on powder, ….ram ball and patch, ….ram the ball and cover with paper wad, etc. No explanations of powder charge, ball dia., patch material. Would anyone mind sharing your knowledge and experience or a source that I might look at?  Thanks

Load it like any other muzzleloader.  You can try loading a patched round ball, or a ball with a wad over and under, or whatever other way you can think of.  The best way to do it is to see what it shoots best with, and then stick with that.
As far as the slow match goes, well, first you will have to prime the pan, then it seems like there is a pan cover that should be put into place, then when you are ready to fire it, remove the cover from the pan and pull the trigger.  The match should already be lit.
Whoosh, bang, repeat as necessary.
Enjoy,
John (Bigsmoke)
