Title: Simon Says: " Do This"
Post by: PetahW on March 17, 2022, 11:58:25 AM
When I was proof-reading a few issues of Guns of the Old West, I ran across a copy of Doc Holliday's knife, and decided to make one as close to the pattern as I could.

So I bought a close copy of the pattern & some scale blanks

I got going on the scales......

And after applying some elbow grease, ended up with this:

IDK whether to use it as a patch knife, or a boot knife (or maybe both)....... whatcha think ?

I do love a coffin handle knife.  Then when you put that handle on one of those double edge blades - WOW!
I likes it.
That says boot knife to me.  I always prefer a knife with a flat blade for patch cutting.
Be proud of that one and enjoy the heck out of carrying it.

Very nice,  I'm currently in Reno at the Pro bowhunters society  convention.
That knife would do well in the knife making competition they have here.

You know, this topic has reminded me that buried somewhere in my boxes of junk, I believe I have a blade similar to that.  Maybe I will dig around out in the garage and see if I can find it.
Geez, just what I need right now, another project.

AHA !!!  I found that little blade, just where I thought it might be.
Now, I gotta figure out where I hid the pieces of scale material.

That'll make a nice Skean-Duh - What are you planning for scales ?

I have a couple of nice pieces of curly maple that should work just fine.  If I ever find them.  Then I will need to get down to the hardware store and pick up some brass rod and figure out where my epoxy is.  Will this never end?  It might just be as easy to think about throwing it all out or trading the pieces for a finished knife.
Then the next question is, "Do I really need another knife?"
Well, it should gather dust as well as any of my other ones.  That's for sure.

John, you really don't need that , just wrap it up and send it to me, I'll give it a good home!

Don't blaspheme  ;)

( I'm up to around 50 knives, and I'm an accumulator, not a collector)

Well, the problem is that knives are not the only thing that I accumulate.  If that were the case, I could pack all 50 of them in one box, no problemo.
Heck, I have that many powder horns laying around the house.
Lathe chisels, same story.
Etc, etc, etc.
It's enough to drive a person nuts.

Jim,
Not so sure that will happen,
BUT,
If you were to show up at the Coeur d'Alene rendezvous in June (10th, 11th and 12th), I'd be plum happy to hand it to you.  Or the Moscow Rdv the following weekend, or even the Colfax, WA one, the same deal would hold true.
Come on over, my friend, and get out of the soggy part of the state.  Or the liberal side of the state.  Whichever applies.

Well, the CdA rendezvous has come and gone.
Originally, the wanted to hold it at the place where we have held it for several years.  But the fellow who owned it died and the kids didn't want it held there.  So, another location was found and it was determined that there was not time enough to get it ready, so they decided it would be a good thing to have a one day shoot instead at one of the member's place.  It was just terrific.  The day started off raining a bit, then about 9 AM the clouds cleared and the sun came out and it turned just beautiful.  The competition was a rifle trail walk, a pistol trail walk and knife and hawk.  Good, tight competition all.  Most enjoyable, glad I was there to take part.
