Title: Fowlers or Sporting Guns
Post by: Feltwad on September 10, 2022, 01:41:14 PM
Fowlers is a term used for a flintlock single barrel of 12bore and smaller but here in the UK they are known has sporting or game guns. A fowling gun is a large bore gun of 10 to 4bore plus a punt gun   enclosed are a couple of images of what we call sporting or game guns

Feltwad,
It is always a pleasure to view your offerings of various firearms.  You have sure shown some beauties.  Thank you so much.
The possible exception being the bottom one on the rack.  It kind of looks like the product of leaving a firearm and an oar together in a closet over the winter.
Can you tell us a little bit about that one, please?  Thank you,
John (Bigsmoke)

I also thought of a paddle for the punt in that Spanish Sporting Gun!  Thank you for showing those.  You have a truly lovely collection!  The half stock, second from the top, looks like it could have been the inspiration for Samuel Hawken's rifles....

What a great collection you have and thanks for posting them.  Terminology is frequently a stumbling block when it comes to understanding what we mean.  For instance, I refer to my smoothbore as a smoothbore or a musket.  That can be nit-picked but one has to find something that can describe a gun or at least is easy to stick with.
