So fiddlin with this new to me .45  and it's painfully obvious the builder had very little wood working experience.
Poor fit all around from the lock to the bbl channel to the tang breech interface. Not sure what type of wood this is either.
My question, would you restock this Russ Hamm lock and unknown bbl. Or just replace all the wood putty and run with that.
Also if restock is the way to go, what stock and where would be the best place to get one.  The bbl is 29". Short huh?

My personal feelings are that it should be "restocked" - and you may just have to make the stock yourself / or find someone to do it.  :shake

thanks for the reply joe.
I've been looking at some pecatonic river stocks, resonably priced.

What I was thinking of going with is a basic full stock, no lock inlet but have them inlet the 13/16 " bbl and cut the RR channel/hole .
them I can cut it to my LOP, shape the butt and cut the forend to length and cap it , inlet the lock , trigger and tang.

Seems to me that would be the best way to go VS starting with a complete blank. never done that!

Definetlly need to do something, I'm afraid it will fall apart if i shoot it in its current condition  :laffing
besides , ive been wanting to build another gun so this may be the cheapest way to go.

I'm not a gun builder Kevin, but I liked what you did with that TC Hawken .And I'm sure whatever you do, it will turn out fine. Then when you're done, I'll hire you to give my TC Hawken a remodel job.

I dont think you could afford me No powder,  ;) but I'd be honored .  the hardest part of the TC was reshaping the nose cap.  the new steel one in much smaller and tapered than the brass factory one. took alot of filing and fitting.
All the hardware on this old gal appears in decent shape so I guess its time to order a stock.
Not sure how long it will take to get that in my hands so in the meantime I think I will repair this stock best it can be and see if I can get some shots in.

Well, I got it in my head that I could remove some wood and filler from the lock mortise and square things up, then make a plug, glue it in and viola and new lock face.  man it sounded so good in my head. just too much filler and little wood left.
So track of the wolf is sending me an Ohio rifle stock ,john vincent and son design which is pre inlet for a 13/16 octagon barrel and a Goulcher lock , which is an R E davis copy, which is the same shape and dimensions of this Russ Hamm lock I have.  so I'm rolling the dice the lock will fit with minimal fussin' .
ordered new underlugs for the barrel and new thimbles as the old one was epoxied to the stock, no tang or flat to pin it in just a round brass tube glued on.
everything was in stock at TOTW so hoping to have it soon and start polishing a turd.  :lol sign

If that doesn't work out, send Pecatonica the original stock and have them replicate it.  I have done that with several rifles now and am pleased with how they turned out.

This was the original plan .  looks looks like I'd have to remove almost everything, all the way thru. ?
Once the stock arrives I'll get started anew.

New stock has arrived. Some fitting for the breech and tang will be needed.
I thought I had ordered a full stock but as you can see it's a half stock.
Ok , no problem so let's grind off these tabs

And surprise

It's already tapped for and under rail I assume.
 Only one hole though.

The other lug was nicked by the drill bit.
 Tomorrow the fitting begins.

Coming along.
Barrel is in, did my first dovetail job on the underlug . feeling good.
Locks in, now working on the trigger assembly and guard.
At some point I'll attach the under barrel rail and thimble.
I think then I can sand, finish , shoot and sell ??
It needs a good sanding, I really should wash my hands more

It's all schmutz from candle black.
I've tried gloves, I wear em at work all day but I just like getting my hands dirty.
It will sand out.  Heading to wild horse rendezvous in Montana this weekend so she'll have to wait.

Wild horse is great.  We really enjoyed it last year.  First time we ever went.  Not sure why, it wasn't all that far away.  Oh well, sure missed out on that one.
