Title: Need some help/advice

I recently decided to get back to shooting a bow again.
It's been quite a while and what with old timers my memory isn't what it should be.

 I picked up a Bear Grizzly, 45#, AMO 56", and have a few questions about the brace height.
 It seems awfully high to me, 8 - 7/8".

I used to draw 30" back in "the day". My anchor was my thumb joint touching the back of my jaw bone.
With this bow I can barely make it to the corner of my mouth!
My old Bear Grizzly from years ago, 55#, was a longer bow and the draw was smoother and not the same as this one.
I realize a shorter bow will "stack" but this seems way too much.

Also with this bow strung I feel as if the bow is being strained at less than the corner of the mouth anchor.

My question is what should the brace height be and what string length??

 Any and all advice will be appreciated.  Thanks!

Well, you're not in luck, Ron just went bowhunting.  Now, ridjrunr is another expert, maybe he'll see this.  There are a few others, too, but then Fletch is recuperating.  Oh well, someone will chime in...!

Well what I have found out on my own is that for a AMO of 56" the string should be 52"long.
The string that is on it is 50".
The 2" difference will make a change in the brace height.

Just what that height should be ideally is what I have to find out next.

Still open to any help.

The brace heght maybe a little high, I would try for 8" and see how it shoots but sometimes the shorter bows require a higher brace height. I shoot the 60" AMO Bears at around 8". As far as your 30" draw, that is way more than that bow was designed for. Most of those older Bear bows were designed for a 28" draw and so it would definatly feel like you were coming to the end of the stroke before you get to full draw.   Mike

I do realize I will have to modify my draw to hold at 30". Will take some getting use to but that is how it is I guess.
As soon as I get the 52" string I will see what happens to the brace height.

deadfallpaul,Yes, it sounds as though yer string is tooo short.Do you have stuff to build a flemish string?IMO that is the best as they are adjustable + _ .500" or so.My Bear cat. are in storage at this time or I could look it up, but I would guess that you should be around 71/2 or 7 3/4".My string making stuff is in my trunk if ya need one ,just let me know.Also IMO,you should just go ahead and get yerself a longer bow,way more comfy to shoot.If ya want to talk recurves I got some available,(special today for TMA members :shake

Oneshot is correct, your 30" draw is too long for a 56" Grizzly.  Some bows that length can handle a 30" draw but they have a different riser design that would move the bow hand more forward.  If you could find a 58" Grizzly, that may work for you.  Even a 52" Kodiak Mag might work because it does move the bow hand more forward via different riser design.

I had previously shot a 1960 Grizzly and had no problem with the 30" draw.
Guess you and oneshot are correct in that the 56 incher is too short for my draw.
Been practicing out back and with the shorter draw am getting use to it.
You can beat I am looking for an older Griz, 60" - 62", but you know the money they are bringing!!
