Caplock Long Guns / Re: English Big Game Rifle

I'm trying to remember who made a rifle which shot belted balls, and yes No Powder, they look like Saturn, sort of.  Darn it, I just can't recollect which military rifle used them.  I looked up the Ferguson and the Hall, both were breach loaders but nothing on belted bullets.... Ah, got it, the Brunswick Rifle: https://researchpress.uk/firearms/british-military-longarms/brunswick-rifle/

I knew I had read about it many moons ago!

Thanks for your comments Dennis. I was going to use it, but your comments and comments from others have me convinced that I should trash this stuff. And as Kees said, I don't want to destroy a new pot. I wish I were more educated about metals, so I would know what I'm throwing in the pot. Maybe learning about metals might be one trick this old dog can't learn.

Not for sure about what you have BUT if you get zinc in your lead melt, the melt will look like oatmeal mush. Pure lead melts at 621*'s and zinc melts at 800 something *'s. I think your original melt had some zinc in it. Zinc is harder than lead also. Pure lead at 800*'s plus takes on a purple like hue if that'll help you decide about the temperature of your melt. Good luck and if it was me, I'd chuck that stuff away and stick with pure lead for special shoots and REAL wheel weights I.E lead ones for the plunking and blasting trips.

Looks to me like all those sights slide down the barrel as one unit.

what are the numbers down the barrel? at first I thought they were marks for the tip up sights... I don't think so...

belted bullet.... seems to me that in the back of my dusty mind... there was a British martial rifle that shot a belted ball... maybe something about a leather patched belted ball....

That looks to be a very heavy rifle...

TMA Postal Shoots / Re: End is nigh

Nessmuk, could we post our own targets rather than emailing to you?
That way it’s easier on you and we know we have an entry. Also others will be able to see them.

Hmmm it does look like a larger notch fore and smaller aft.
Maybe acts like an aperture  of a camera and focus the target.
 ??
Kevin
Camera diaphragm isn't a bad analogy, except it helps focus the rear notch.  You cut the front notch to give you a sharp-edged sight.  Actual measurement of the front notch will depend on the shooter and the thickness of the rear sight blade/size of the hole drilled.

LongWalker's answer seems very logical to me.  As I said in my original post, it was in an advertisement for a rifle on another forum.  There were actually two rifles with this sight posted by that seller, which piqued my interest.
