New build idea
« on: February 25, 2013, 03:03:17 PM »
BEFORE I even finished the first old gun kit (CVA Colonial .45 from the 1970's...) I bought the next practice kit.  This one is a .50 Traditions Trapper.
One idea I was toying with was to build it with all metal in the white.  The barrel is no issue, but is there a way to remove the case hardening found on these kits to make it plain?

Thanks

Will that work on case hardened finishes? Learn something new every day!

It worked well on Lyman GPR, and T/C locks that I wanted to "brown",... so I'm sure it will work on other color case hardened finishes.  :rt th

I don't really think those locks are case hardened.  The steel is drillable so they're not cased. I've just polished many of them either with a piece of wet or dry paper or my buffer wheel....Tom

Now that you've mentioned it,... I've never tried "drilling" those locks, so you're probably right.  :rt th

...., but for "tedmn's" purposes, the blue and rust remover should work good.

I once tried to take some surface rust off of an old CVA lockplate with some of that black really fine grit sandpaper and the colors came off along with the rust.

Yeah,.... the "beauty" of using the blue and rust remover is, it gets in all the "nooks and crannies" when swabbed on with a q-tip,... NO ELBOW GREASE REQUIRED!!!!!!  :rt th  :rt th
