looking for help on making new locks

I have a double barrel 19 gauge that I want to put new locks on it.  I want a V-pan style lock and the only way I can do that is make it myself.  So I am looking for any info/help that I can find on doing just that.

 frankly thats a very good tutorial  on building the manton lock .
 i have built many locks through the years   botk flint and caplock  and reguarless of what they are , the basics are all the same .
 if you have a specific question or dont quite uderstand something , i can help you out .
 as far as how to build the mantion lock . in a nut shell thats it right there , step by step

The Rifle Shoppe, they took 8 months.  Also Steve used cast parts which I do not have access to as they are not available.

yes  TRS can take a long time . there known for slow service . in Fact so well known for it that one should expect it .  Personally I never send them e-mails .  I only talk to them over the phone . Sometimes it takes a few days to get someone to answer but they allways have . Yes it’s a real PITA .
but if you want  to build  a lock  other then what’s commercially available and use castings , then your eather going to wait for TRS or  hope Blackly and Son have them .
 Past that your looking at building one from scratch  or  modifying an existing manufactured lock  or  lock builders kit  to make a V pan Manton .
Most certainly doable  but a who lot of work.

so is that what your looking at doing  or are you wanting to start from a  a plate and block . then go at carving your own ?

I did try to call them and after many days I just gave up.  The reply email said they only have singles, nothing for doubles and nothing for left hand.

So I will have to go elsewhere either modify or cut, more than likely cut.




Current locks, both of them.  Blackley and Son seems to only have the right hammer.

i would then buy the right hand lock . then make a mirror  lock to match.
 i had to do that  with the small Davis Becky flintlock
  you also might order a 2nd frizzen .
 i say that because on the V P an the frizzing isnt really off set . so with only alittle work , a person could possibly make a right hand V pan frizzen , work on the left hand side .
 then all you would have to do is duplicate the pan arrangement  which frankly wouldn’t be that hard
or
wait for the matched set to actually be announced .

The V pan locks are now available, time has not permitted us to update web
listings I am afraid, so apologies for that.

I have attached an image of the original R Hand lock, as we received it for
moulding, both left and right are available in 'as cast' form.

Looks like I will have an order in soon.  At most I will have to do the lock plate as my plate is not the same size.

The biggest problem I see with this is if the lock is very small.

The cost is £110.00 per lock set, plus postage.
shipping cost would probably be between £12 and £15 insured, non insured would be £7.

So about $210 USD for a set of locks.  Not bad and going on the must buy list.

IMO thats very good if they are  finished properly  and built .  casting wise its alittle exspensive but  things cost alot more now days with the decline in the value of the dollar .
as to redoing the lock plate .  you could i guess .
 however  if im right , the locks you have are from an indian made SXS .
 if it were me  i would re stock it .  watch for a real nice piece of  walnut . you will have a lot nicer piece in the long run .

So has anyone successfully done business with  Blackley and Son? I ordered a topjaw screw for a Miquelet lock back in Jan. and have yet seen it, and have not been able to get a reply from Kevin, poor showing so far..... now the site says they are moving expect delays...... well my order was before the move over the past months I have sent three emails and sent three emails through their web site the last got a robo response that they were moving........ Poor form Kevin Poor form. it's only a lousy cast screw with a ring on top..... I ordered it from them because the rifle shop takes a year to get anything.... looks like Blackley & Son are the English version of the Rifle shop. I'll end up making the part from scratch and then it will come.

This may not be what you want, but Chambers offers his flintlock with a large rectangular plate & detached pan.  Right & left.  Could you modify the pan to a "Vee" & shape plate as you want, even fiddle with hammer some.  I've done that a few times on single bbl. guns with a rotten lock.  Just a random idea.   ....Tom
