siler lock with strong main spring
« on: April 01, 2015, 12:48:23 PM »
Hello, It's been quite some time since I've posted here. I try to look around till I get my answer.
Hope everyone has been well.
Can't find what I'm looking for so here goes.
I have a large siler lock with a stiff main spring. Really stiff. The lock functions well, nothing is rubbing and it's all smoothed up. But the main spring is horribly strong, it really slams down on the plate.
I have other large silers that are not nearly as strong and still work fine.
I've used this gun over the last two years squirrel hunting and has always worked fine.
How can I reduce the tension of the spring with out going to far?
I could buy another spring but it maybe the same.
I could send it out or just replace the lock with a deluxe. Juggling cost there.
I'm not sure if this is an old or new siler lock.
Any suggestion before I replace it?
I hope I explained that ok.
Thanks for the help
Don

Hi Don,... if it were up to me, I'd probably try a new mainspring.
It never hurts to have a spare on hand anyway, and mainsprings can be touchy critters when/if you try to lighten them.  :laffing

I would send it the Jim Chambers (or at least talk over the problem with him and see what he suggests).

Sorry for getting back to reply so late. Been REALLY under the weather this late week.
Thanks for the suggestions. Contacting Jim had crossed mind but I thought I maybe ably to work it out, so this next week I'll give Jim a call and send it in or order a new one.
Thanks again.

Called Chambers today. The lady said they do not work on them because of just being to busy making the new locks. She gave me Brad Emig #, so I'll talk to him and see what the difference in the repairs and a new large siler deluxe [$175].
Besides the main spring  found a chip out of the half  cock notch . This lock was to have been new when I bought the gun 4 years ago. Guess not. Anyway there I am for now.

Sending the lock to Brad Emig. Just wait and see what Brads says.
