My Renegade is asking for a new barrel
« on: March 22, 2011, 07:18:44 PM »
As you can tell from my name I shoot lefty. Would like to have a .40 or .45 barrel for my Renegade, but finding a T/C breech plug to have one made is next to impossible. Have located a used barrel for sale that is in not very good shape inside. My question is, how feasible is it to have a barrel maker use that breech plug and make a barrel of .40 or .45 for it. I know it would be fairly heavy because of the 1" across the flats. What length would be best for target shooting and some hunting? Other solution would be to have the exsisting .54 barrel reamed out to a 20ga. smoothbore.
Any thoughts?

maybe im misunderstanding you ,
but track of the Wolf carries TC breech plugs and tangs . so it would be just a mater of  getting a 40 or 45 cal  barrel  that is the same size across the flats as your existing barrel  and have it  drilled to accept a ¾-16 plug

i will call TOW. Have been told in the past that T/C left hand plugs were not available anywhere. Hope you are right because that would be the way to go.
Thanks

A lot of the cast parts that Track sells come from Pete Allen.  He does make a replacement plug for right hand T/C's but I don't think he does for leftys.
Of course, T/C used to sell replacement breech plugs, but that was long ago and far away.  But you might contact them anyway.  Also Fox Ridge Outfitters, T/C's custom shop might also be able to help you.

Fox Ridge is a thing of the past, gone, kaput. I did buy the .54 LH barrel, so if worst comes to worst that breech plug could be used. Finding a barrel blank 1" accross the flats may also be hard to find. Still have to call TOW and Green Mountain.

A guy at Track told me last fall that GM was making machine gun barrels for the army and wouldn't be making "hobby" barrels again until late 2011. Maybe thats changed, who knows.
