Cant get double set triggers to work on CVA Hawken Kit gun.
« on: April 11, 2015, 11:55:28 PM »
I bought a CVA Hawken Kit gun on GB a while back ago. It was missing a few parts which I replaced through Deer Creek Products. The rifle only put me back $36.00. Over all condition is pretty new as a kit gun. I redone the metal and sanded and finished up the stock real nice. Shined up the Brass and put her all back together. 50 Cal. CVA Hawken. Now the problems!!!!! I couldnt get the hammer to stay calked or half calked. I adjusted the small screw between the triggers and nothing happened. I did notice a small alan head screw behind the rear set trigger. I adjusted the alan head screw and got the hammer to calk and half calk and fire from the front trigger only. The set trigger still doesnt work. I removed the triggers to see if I could get them to work properly out of the rifle. The set trigger still wouldnt work and by now both triggers seemed to be binding up. I kept messing with them and then the thin wire spring went flying across the room! I searched everywhere for the wire spring and ended not finding it. I ordered another trigger mech. for it through Deer Creek. It should be here Monday. Can some one give me some step by step advice to installing the trigger mech. properly and having the hammer and both triggers working the way they should? Respectfully, cowboys1062

What do you mean set tgr still didn't work out of gun ?  didn't the rear tgr catch the front one to set them ? Binding up may be crud, clean 'em up good.  The screw between tgr's adjusts the amount of pull to set them off,  screwed in to far and they will not click together.  the screw in the back relieves pressure on tgr main springmaking it easier to pull back the rear tgr.  Take a good look at new ones when they show up.  If don't work inside gun may be a rubbing problem somewhere.  I use an old oil lamp to blacken parts to be fitted.  Put tgr's in gun then pull 'em out and look for black rub marks in mortise or scuff marks on tgr.  Trim marks off wood with a small chisel,  try again until no marks---should work, even if it takes 10 times fitting.  Thats the way to fit all parts, soot transfer......Let usknow buckarooo....Tom (ex-buckaroo)

Thanks Tom, When I was messing around with the triggers out of the gun I accidently lost the long wire spring that was in the trigger mech. It went shooting across the room. I looked hell and high water for it and never found the spring. I then ordered another Trigger Mech. from Deer Creek. It should be here Monday (tomorrow). I will take your advice and see if that helps. Thankyou, Respectfully, cowboys1062

Try a magnet on floor, you mite catch it.  You can put a Davis set tgr in there, little work and much better set....a thought.  Tom

You might find the problem to lie not with the trigger adjustment  but with the "sear adjustment screw."  You screw the sear adjustment screw too far out to create your condition.  Screw it in and the rear trigger will begin to set.  Then the front trigger will work.  To far in and the front trigger will fire with very light touch and become dangerous.  There is not much distance between too far out and too far in.

Well, I got the triggers in from Deer Creek today. I cleaned them up real good and installed them into the muzzleloader. The lock cocks and half cocks like it should and the set trigger works perfectly. I didnt have to make any adjustments at all. It feels great when everything comes together like it should! Thankyou all for the replies and advice. I grew a little more knowledge wise. Respectfully, cowboys1062.
