FCI barrels - Charles Burton
« on: March 19, 2019, 09:15:03 PM »
Just a "heads-up" for anyone thinking about having a barrel made by Charles Burton at FCI.

I placed an order, for a tapered 32" 20ga./.62 cal., on February 3rd. 2018.
Charles said the lead time on the barrel would be 6-8 months

On February 2nd. 2019 I contacted and asked him how the barrel was "coming along", and he said it was "waiting it's turn on the lathe".

On March 4th. 2019 he sent me an email saying,.... "Will be heading your way next week."

Well today is March 19th. 2019,.... and I still haven't gotten a barrel I ordered more than a year ago,....

After this latest experience, ....I doubt I'll be placing another order with FCI/Charles Burton again.

WoW Rondo, that's a long waiting period...

Is he that busy? One would think knocking out a smoothy barrel would be easier then a rifled barrel, but I don't know as I never made a barrel.  Sorry to hear you've had such a long wait. I expect we won't be seeing this one at the Rendezvous this year.

Personal problems?  Illness?  Accident?  There could be extenuating circumstances that it didn't get done on time.

I'm patiently waiting for mine from Bobby Hoyt, but I have a feeling he's working on that between working on other stuff.  Hope it doesn't take a year, though, since he has everything but the barrel for my PA Hunter!

It won't take me long to build,.... if I can ever get my hands on the dang barrel.  :bl th up

Although after waiting this long,.... I've been giving some serious thought of using the barrel to build a full stock flint smoothy, instead of a 1/2 stock percussion as originally planned.  :bl th up

Maybe,..... but then again, that's what the email system is for.

I doubt you'll have the same experience with Bobby Hoyt.  :hairy

I talked with him on the phone once, that was enough.
However,.. I wanted to get a .62 smooth barrel to put in my Pedersoli 1807 Harpers Ferry pistol.
I called and chatted with Mr. Ed Rayl and he said sure but it may be a few months, I said ok, no problem as I have other projects going. That was in June.I called him I think mid fall and he said "a couple more weeks but I have it ready to go, do you have an under rib and breechplug?" I said I did not. A month later I had a barrel perfectly duplicated to the factory one with under rib and oversize tang installed. ( he indicated all pcs were scrap or spare pcs just laying around.) All for what he quoted me for just a barrel back in June. He obviously likes what he does and was a very nice guy to chat with. Thats good old fashion customer service. He will get more of my buisness in the future.

Huh, I ordered a barrel from him a couple of years ago and got it pretty much right on time. I will have to agree that he's not the easiest person to get in touch with or the most pleasant person that I have ever talked to but he made me a nice barrel.

John Getz is making barrels now and I got mine within the promised deadline give or take a week or so.  K
