rendering bear fat
« on: July 18, 2009, 03:09:40 PM »
A friend gave me some bear fat the other day. I want to make grease for mocassins and other uses.  How is this to be done?

Place bear fat in a large pot and place over medium heat. Heat untill all the grease comes out of the fat. The fat will start to resemble pork rinds. That means you have all the grease out. Strain out the cracklins, cool and jar. Will keep a long time sealed and in a dark cool place.

Cut into small chunks to make it easier. Go low & slow with the heating process, and you should get bear oil to seperate out of the grease. If you go too hot, the oil boils off.

well you could cook it alittle more . when its completely  done , the oil will seperate and bee a golden color .
or you can now just  scoop the grease of the top and put it in its own jar  whats on the bottom is the oil
