Every once in a while I make something that I'm even proud of!  Well, here is such an item.  I've made whale flint strikers but this is my favorite. I'm sending it to Muzzleloader Magazine.  They are going to review it.  I hate to brag but I really like this thing! It sparks like a 4th of July sparker!  I just had to share with you.  Forgive me for bragging. :)

Nice Wally. What kind of steel are you using? Gas or coal forge?  I have had mixed results in a gas forge, even with 1095 bar stock. That whale striker is very clever!

Rick, I make these out of old files.  I use a propane forge.  I have a method that I use.  After I soften the file with heat I do the shaping.  I then heat the item super hot.  I then dip it in oil.  I reheat it super hot and then dip it in carbon powder. With carbon powder residue on it I heat it super hot again and then quench it in water.  I then drink the water (just kidding!). :)
It works really great!
