Lyman Mold Question??????
« on: December 18, 2011, 08:05:43 PM »
I made a trade with someone for a Lyman mold. He said the mold was a .610. I received the mold Friday, and I'm not sure if it a .610, or a .600 mold.

The numbers on the mold are:

600 AV

2H 675

On the other half of the mold is:

9-00
675

A .600 ball from my current mold fits this .610 mold perfectly. Can anyone here help me determine what size this mold is?

Thanks so much!

You'll have to cast a ball Swamp, then take it to someone with a micrometer to measure it. That's the only certain way to do it. In other words, I can't tell you from the numbers you gave. ;)  If it's a .600 and you don't want it , I'm interested in it. Regards GH

By the numbers,I'd say that the mould will average a .600 ball, but dont be surprised if some are .675!   :Doh!  :lol sign

Swamp....I think you have a .600 mold based on the 600 AV on it.  The model number should be 2675600.  A .610 should have 610 on it and the model number would be 2675610.  Having given you the benefit of my sage knowledge I now have to say that the truth is you still need to cast a ball and mic it to be sure.  I prefer Lyman steel molds over Lee aluminum ones because I don't have to baby the steel molds as much.  On the other hand, in my experience the Lee molds are more likely to actually be the size they are supposed to be.  The cavity in a mold is formed by a cutter called a "cherry".  When created, a cherry is likely to be slightly larger than desired to allow for wear during a production run.  The first molds cut will be oversize by a few thousandths.  As the cherry wears it gets smaller and smaller until it hits the limit of tolerance and is changed out.  I have a Lyman mold marked .490 that actually casts .486 balls.  The reason I suspect Lyman blocks show more variation is because the steel wears the cherry faster.  The softer aluminum is easier on the cherry.  If you knew all this I hope you stopped reading several sentences back!

I don't like the fact that both sides of that mold don't have at least one set of the same numbers as the other side....if I understood ,this right.

The industry standard for cutting cherries to make the mold is through the use of a 20:1 alloy, commonly known as Lyman #2 alloy. Both sides of a mold are stamp with the same identifying number so the can be clean, oiled and reassembled properly.
If Swamp has the .610 mold and a ball cast from the "other" mold but doesn't have a Micrometer or a Caliper, simply drop one casting in the other mold...if it's larger it won't go in, if it's smaller and the mold will close ,you can hear it "thunk" around a little bit, since lead ball don't really rattle.
Then, of course, you just fire up the pot and cast some and see first hand what you got.

The AV is for "A" Vendor...For almost twenty five years, until 2002, the A-Vendor for Lyman was Bill Grady of El Paso Texas. (and, I understand that Walt Melander, also of El Paso Texas, once held a "V" designation with Lyman too, before he became world famous with his own designs).
The BV is for "B" vendor...another person / small machine shop that makes molds on contract for Lyman.
The CV is the same thing, and on and on it goes.....
This is a system that was started by John Barlow back in the days when Lyman was still called the "Ideal" bullet & mold company.

We have an old-timer from the Cast Bullet Association that drops in every once in awhile.
His first name is Doug, but for the life of me I can't remember his last name. I hope he sees this and offers some help on this  subject. Doug is a very knowledgeable person and a wonderful writer, I will see if I can't round him up.
I feel sure you'll enjoy his writings.

There was a time with many of the older Lyman / Ideal molds you could read the bullet size and the weight of the bullet the mold drop, ie 600437 meant the size was .600 and the ball would weigh 437gr, with the use of #2 alloy of course.
Then we went to a system where the first three numbers were the size, and last three represented the "top-punch" for sizing"
Then we went to a computerized system that supposedly increased production,  and those numbers mean little of anything to the person buying, trading, or selling anymore.

Uncle Russ...
It's the many things we don't do that totally sets us apart.

Here's what I think based on what you guy's have posted. I think the mold is a .600, AV being "A" Vendor, 2H 675 (with 675 stamped on both halves) being the run number, and 9-00 being the date of manufacture September of 2000???????????

Just a guess, but kinda makes sense. What do ya think?

Thanks Doc!  :shake

You know, if this is a .610 mold, why can't they stamp it .610?

Swamp,

If it is marked with a 600 and truely throws a .610 ball, I would call that "cubicle logic". Pretty common in manufacturing  :lol sign
