54 smoothy
« on: June 19, 2013, 06:00:05 AM »
got home tonight and leaning on the table was the shipping tube i sent, a rusty t/c hawkens 50 in, to Mr Hoyte.
Figuring since it hadn't been that long since i sent it out he took one look at it and sent it back with a note saying it was junk.

So i cut the end of the tube open and the first thing i see is a brand new shiny flintlock breech plug i asked him to install

so now i have a 54 smoothy drop in flint barrel. It cost me less then $150 im guessing with shipping plus the breech plug..

I keep seeing people saying just buy one, but try to find one. the ones i had found where going for over 300.

so if you have a old tc 50 and want a smoothbore send it to Mr Hoyte before we loose such a wonderful resource. i hope he has some one he is teaching the craft to.

I take a peek down the barrel and low and behold Smooooth!!

This baby was r-u-s-t-y
this is the breech plug he pulled off.

all i have to do is drill the vent hole and brown..

Looking good there, Greg.  Looking forward to a range report on it.
Wondering just a little why you went with 28 gauge instead of 20?  Thinking loading components would be much more plentiful for the 20.  Also, it seems that the lighter barrel would swing just a little bit better as well.
I know, it's already a done deal, just thinking is all.

A Jekyll and Hyde difference, that's for sure.

i wanted as much material left as possible,  a 15/16s doesnt leave much room for error.

Silly me.  Of course, that is a 15/16" barrel.  For some reason I was thinking it a 1".  One time I put a .62 rifle barrel on a .54 Renegade and it worked out pretty good.
Of course, look at the thickness on a shotgun barrel.  And look at the thickness on the old 8 and 4 bore double rifles.  Not much there.

Greg,
Why don't you give OC a call to find out what is going on.
Squeaky wheel gets the grease, don't you know.
I would think they would keep the .530 rb's on hand.  Maybe they ran out and haven't run any more yet?  Maybe you could go with .535's if that is the problem.
I just received a batch of leather straps from them, so they are shipping this week.
Other than that, not sure what to tell you.
