a simple possibles bag
« on: July 19, 2013, 08:28:13 PM »
got the leather as a crazy crow "kit" (hah! just a buncha strips of leather).  used a 1/16" punch to pop in all the lace holes - dang! - there was a LOT of holes!  stitched it up with tripled up 15# synthetic sinew and a sail needle.  it's a goodly size, not too large, and not too small.  looks a lot redder in the camera's flash than it really is, but think i will work in some neatsfoot oil to both preserve and darken.  had a small 2" helle blade hanging around and made a handle out of a piece of 5/8" birch dowel with some red oak for the butt end, and the sheath from a leftover piece of the bag leather, both leather and sinew laced on the sheath to the bag's strap for easy access.  seems like it should all just work fine ... i'll see when she goes afield this weekend ..........  :roll eyes

Good job, RFD, keep it up.
One piece at a time, it all takes shape.
Don't be in a hurry.  figure out where you want to go before you get all carried away.

thanx for all yer nice comments, much obliged folks!  :toast

i know i could've done it up with some fancy, but i like the looks and usage of "functional" gear.  here's the flap opened and contents removed.  i use dutch "dry" lubed patch strips and they need to be contained else the oil leeches out into the leather.  there's brass 4fg primer for when i use 2fg ball powder, a brass adjustable charger and down to the left a little 55 grain horn charger i made with removable horn "funnel" tip embedded in a circle of red oak, a stiff leather ball bag with leather flip top (this works real well!), a piece of hack saw blade glued into a piece of red oak for adjusting the cock jaws, a small plastic bottle of moose milk for the between-shot wipe - not shown is a 5 piece gun flint wallet i sewed up and a variety of touch hole picks on a leather lace.  life's still good - so far.
