Very Fast Fuse
« on: August 03, 2013, 12:09:17 PM »
For the fun of it, after receiving an ad from Skylighter, I bought some of their "Quickmatch Visco".  It's not real quickmatch, so it can be shipped.  It burns at 2'/sec., so it's quite fast--it's like touching off bp.  They have warning stickers all over the length of the coil (which you are supposed to keep on it) to not mix it up with ordinary fuse--with very good reason.

Here's a short clip I made today:

Yep that's fast alright. So what is it used for?

It's used primarily in fireworks (I've made my own bp rockets, which is quite interesting to do), although I imagine there are other bp areas it could be used in.

Here is the blurb from Skylighter's ad:

Quote
Why use it in place of quickmatch?

Simple: Quickmatch is the preferred fuse to use to launch aerial shells. But it is the one fuse that we cannot legally ship to you. So actual, live Quickmatch is probably "unobtanium" for you, unless you live close to Skylighter in Virginia.

But this new fuse is the next best thing. A 3-foot piece of Quickmatch virtually explodes instantaneously. This fuse is not quite that fast, but almost. AND it can be shipped to you!

For various reasons I have decided not to stock this stuff as a permanent product. We just received two cases of it, and don't knowif we'll be able to get it again.

Now, here's my honest take on this fuse: it is a good thing to have in your fuse "arsenal," but comes with a BIG "BUT"...

It would be dangerous to get it mixed up with regular, slow burning Visco.

That's why we attach three warning labels to every roll. Keep this stuff separate from your regular green Visco. You absolutely do not wanna mix them up.

So, why do I want it for myself?

Well, I love having fuses that burn at different speeds. Particularly for setting up consumer fireworks displays.

S'pose you wanted to fire a bank of mines, or a line of ten mortars, not all at the same time, but in quick succession? This fuse is perfect for that.

It's also perfect for aerial shell leasders if you don't have any Quickmatch on hand.

Here's a second video I did.  I butted regular fuse up to the fast stuff.

I used a combination of the Quickmatch Visco, plus regular fuse to touch off my boat howitzer--it works great.
