Got a free gun!!!!!!!!!!!
« on: July 26, 2014, 05:36:18 PM »
Scored H&A deerstalker 58 Caliber, stock cracked, for end cracked, but complete.

Load in bore, will advise when it's out and I figure how to rebuild. Cost = take it away we don't like guns.

Well, I guess you deserve to brag; just let us know how it goes.

WAIT!!!!  :stop

don't pull that plug unless you have to!!!!
You can likely use a ball puller and extract the whole mess! Save yourself the misery of having to reinstall the plug and set everything up again.......

Find a stout shotgun cleaning rod (aluminum or steel - something with a handle that you can whack on, or clamp in a vise if needed) and the correct thread ball puller and give it a try at least once before rippin the barrel apart - besides the WD40 will turn the powder into a messy paste and will lube the patch a bit - it'll likely pull out with out a fuss!
Unless there's the dread rust holding everything together in there..... Heck it's worth a try!

Revolving the plug is the best way to check the treading for deterioration and the bore for use.

I have been a BP gunsmith Professionally Pulling a plug for me on this gun is no big deal. If it was a CVA I would not attempt to pull it.

I have re-barreled at least 15 H&A actions in the last 30 years. They are not new to me. I have 20-30 50 caliber Knight rifle barrel screw-ups they at GM (who made all of them) cut the actions part off. Bores are sweet, the barrel outsides need refinish of course do to dings, bangs, and light rust.

I do however get very nervous over any long loaded BP barrel as until they are unloaded completely they are very dangerous.

I have many new breech plugs for the barrels I made in my shop 20 years ago. Sorry none are for sale.

Barrel is Toast, Rusted beyond saving, Breech plug all so suspect. We are coming into the season that hunting is prime. See all when the season is over and will tell how I have fixed the "free rifle" Note not all gifts are good.

Have it re-bored to 20 gauge ???  Turn a new plug from a grade #5 bolt and get a new rifle bbl.   So what you got is the action, well thats worth $200-250 today.  A new bbl, & stock 200-250....new gun for less than 500.....Still a good deal...Tom
