welding needed
« on: August 10, 2014, 08:10:31 PM »
I have my dads " Manton " 10 gauge shotgun.

while taking it apart to clean and oil it, the trigger gaurd had a crack in it and decided to let go.
At what would be this corner on this gun.
(i dont have a pic of it with me, im at work its at home so i used this pic to show where the break is).

I need someone to weld it for me for a shoot coming up in the middle of September. It doesn't have to be perfect just clean and even.

boy , thats the worst possable spot . need to find someone with a tig .
alot of these that were not cast , wete simply forged , so  you end up with the metal being foulded and thus very thin right there

"Steel" or iron mounts for London made Colt revolvers were cast malleable iron. I'd bet Manton the same. In my opinion you need a skilled TIG (a.k.a. GTAW) welder and a high nickel weld filler made for cast iron. That is, either about 50% nickel by weight, or about 90% nickel by weight, balance iron.

I'd have to read up on malleable iron metallurgy but I'd think that some manner of s-l-o-w anneal would be appropriate after welding.

Or you could find a guy skilled at silver brazing cast iron. This is not quite like like silver brazing/soldering steel, experience would be nice. Saves annealing, less chance of ruining it. I  could dig up info on brazing cast iron if you wish.

Metallurgist for the last half century.

I have a pro welder I know, just hard to get a hold of him. He once welded an aluminum bar to a steel table,  and it held for what he needed. He certed nuke and food service welding.
