Shooting Supplies Transporter from a Sewing Box

I wanted a box to carry my shooting and cleaning supplies, something more than just a shooting or possibles bag. To be honest, I wasn't too worried about historical correctness, but I did want it to look like it might have come from the past.
I found a wooden sewing box that had possibilities. The base was very flimsy, so I reinforced it with three pieces of 1" x 1". The hinges and other metal work were just as flimsy, so I headed to Ace hardware to find more substantial replacements. Here is how the box looked after replacing some pieces of metal. You can just see a 1 x 1 on the bottom:

The next step was to build a shelf. The shelf was made using part of an old, 3x5 card holder:

Ole Rusty shows up frequently because he is always around me at the house.
He can be found draped around my shoulders while cleaning guns or reloading. During the Winter, he makes a warm collar when I am at the computer.
He also has our 3 Greyhound dogs thoroughly intimidated.

       Do you have a photo or two of the box as you found it? Also outside
dimensions of bottom 1/2 of box?? Did you line the rope holes with anything??

The first photo with the cat in the box is as close to original as I have. The only addition I had made at that time were the interior right angle brackets, one of which can be seen to the right, behind the cat.
I just tried to put the holes for the rope at the same location on each side.
The bottom measures 13 3/4 x 11". The height from the original bottom is 11". Add another 1" roughly for the 1 x 1 stock I place on the bottom, the 3 of which can be seen in the second photo.

I am afraid that the cat has to stay home and protect all my shooting gear. :lol

(There is a story that goes with that silliness )

It worked the other way for me. I made a box with some nice curly ash. Before I got very far, it got adopted and repurposed as a sewing box! My wife now has a gorgeous addition to her sewing room. She had me make two stacked full width trays with some Hawaiian koa I had laying around. I told her to tell her friends that, no, I will not make another!

Thanks for the inspiration!  I plan on making a range box using the same type as yours.  I want to pattern it after an old box my wife and I found at an antique store.  I have no idea how old it is or who made it (any ideas folks?).  It is too fragile to use as a range box but can be a model.  Mine won't be near as fancy (first project).

Wish I could claim I made it.  I can't cut a straight line in wood using a laser guided table saw!  I picked this up at Hobby Lobby for $24.99.  The box is approximately 10 1/4" H x 12 3/4" W x 10 1/4" D.

I am looking to stain it with Minwax Early American so it won't be as dark as the box I am using as a guide.
