36 caliber Tennessee Mountain rifle

I had so much fun building the 20 bore fowler with my dad that I decided to do another gun. I went with a kit from Jedidiah Starr this time instead of building from a blank, mostly because I couldn't find a decent full stock blank at a reasonable price.

My parts showed up with the pre carved stock yesterday. Im hoping to start on it this week. I received the wrong breech plug with my kit so I have to wait on the correct 5/8-18 plug to breech the barrel.

Here is what I have to start with.

I received the correct breech plug yesterday in the mail and was able to get the barrel breeched, the underlug staples in the barrel and inlet the barrel channel for the staples.

Tonight I plan to get the barrel pinned and finish inletting the lock. If time allows I may work on getting the triggers installed and working.

A little more progress. I should have the buttplate on tomorrow and the trigger guard inlet. I may even get the ramrod pipes in and start finishing shaping.

That's pretty.  I'd love to build a kit some day, but I'm afraid I'd end up screwing it up.

Just go for it, you never know until you try. I never rhought I could do it either and now I am totally addicted to working on these guns.

IF you screw something up thats how you learn. It may cost a little more for a new stock but after you build one you will be proud as can be to hold and shoot something you built with your own hands.

I can't seem to put one down once I start working on it. I spent every waking hour I wasn't working on it thinking about working on it. The pre carved stock cut a lot of time off this one too.

How much did it weigh  in ?  I have a 13/16" X 42" straight oct .36 cal.  (5lb. 2 oz.) barrel and a block of nice curly maple for a new squirrel gun.....Real nice work, lets see a target......Tom

Hi Tom, it weighs close to 8 1/2 pounds according to my bathroom scale. I took it out to sight it in yesterday and couldn't get it to shoot center even with the sights almost completely off the side of the barrel. Took a straight edge to it and the barrel was bent slightly. Dad straightened it with the help of a wooden fence post or so it seemed. I shot it today and with the sights slid almost completely off the barrel it still shoots an inch left. Dads gonna work on it al ittle more this week while Im at work. My patience is wearing thin and im afraid I may throw the damn thing in the wood burner if I mess with it anymore for a few days. If and when it gets straightened out Ill post some target pics or a pic of it in pieces when I wrap it around a tree.
