Horse hide uses

My question being is there any documentation that horse hides were used for anything in the fur trade days
I have a couple horse hides with hair on lap blankets that an old timer gave me for our sleigh rides with our horses
He said his parents loved to use them for sleigh rides when they had horses

I read an account a number of years ago that a horse that died in harness was rendered for its meat, hide and hooves.
