Rendezvous slang
« on: February 25, 2016, 12:00:41 AM »
My son was looking into a rondy this summer that was a tin cup rule
What does that mean or can someone send me somewhere to find out every search I do brings up golf info
Also they said the ladies would be creekin
We are planning on trying to camp at one finally this year and would like to try and be as educated as possible before hand

Thanks everyone

"Tin cup rule" means all drinks must be in period-correct tin cups, not in modern aluminum beer/pop/juice cans, bottles, or etc.

I agree with Riley but I will venture a guess that it means camping near a natural
water supply and not having to bring your own containers.  I general 'primitive' camping
with few or no modern conveniences.

OBTW - we still try to do that here in the Rockies, but with the Giardea and other nasty
bugs I never heard of as a youngin we do sneak in water purifiers or boil everything.   :(

As a water and wastewater treatment professional, Giardia is actually a lesser ocyst. The Cryptosystem Ocyst is the one that you really need to guard against. Either one will attach itself to the lining of the intestines. I believe that Giardia can be removed with medication but the Crypto is with you forever and could eventually lead to death. NEVER NEVER NEVER drink water from a stream or lake or puddle or whatever that hasn't been purified in some fashion. There are way too many things out there that can not only make you extremely sick but also extremely dead.

In today's world, that sounds like some mighty fine advise!

OK,.... that makes sense.  :rt th

I've never attended a rondy that had regular "bath facilities", so I guess I take a lot of stuff for granted.  :)

I like what Longhunter said - now the Libby Rondy at Fawn Creek is great, cause we
can hot foot it down to the Fisher River and go 'dippin' - which we do every afternoon
that is over 90 degrees - which is most of them.  Now lots of good folk go do it - and I
hear the modest thing is to at least go in around a bend from a group up or down stream
of ya....  But it seems them youngin's about 16 to 20 years or so are right fond of floatin'
on down right into a group of us lilly white bearded ol' fat guys.  Now we don't mind this at
all cause I think we do get the better view of the whole ordeal

I have to agree with Spotted Bull.
Giardia is a disease where you say: "Either make me well or take me. " And either option is just fine. Eventually, you do get well, but you can be a carrier for the rest of your life. Somewhere between 2.5 and 20% of people are carriers in the USA. Also, most mammals can carry it. It forms a cyst that can last for decades in the water. Once in a warm body, it comes out and reproduces. So, if some "stuff" gets in the water, there is a reasonable chance that someone drinking that water will get it.
Cryptosporidium is a whole 'nother story.

Remember, there is no "pure" water out there. As W.C. Fields quipped: "I never drink water because fish reproduce in it." :)
