Coach Gun
« on: March 25, 2016, 09:54:35 PM »
Went to the Kalamazoo show last week and I ended up with a new toy. I always wanted a Bess and a canoe gun. What I got is a little bit of both.

It looks like it was based on the English Paget  carbine of 1808 but with differences. It has a 16 inch barrel, a calvary ring and a captured ramrod.

It also has a 75 call bore, a tower lock and a rear sight. The bayonet lug is tapered to serve as a front sight.

Not sure what to call it so I am calling it a coach gun. Whatever you call it the thing is fun to shoot. 100 gr ff, a 735 ball and 10 thou patch is minute of deer at 25 yards. Recoil ain't bad either.

16" barrel, WOW!
I have no clue whatcha might call it either, but much like Roaddog, I betcha that would make a fine Grouse Gun!
Minute of Deer at 25 yds ain't no real slouch either.
Either way you slice it, that has got to be one fun-gun!

Keep us posted on what she does should you ever put her on paper to check the pattern.
One of our Charter Members (Gobbler) once posted that with a similar gun, similar short barrel, .72 bore, he was able to get pretty good patterns at 30 yds. with no muss, no fuss, no special loadings. Makes me wonder what that one might do.

Uncle Russ,

I have every intention of benching the beast and pattering it too. I am also interested in running it across my chronograph.

I will keep you posted.

Ironhand old friend, you definitely got da bug!
But not to worry, it is shared by many and presents itself as having waaaay to much fun!
Being in my mid 70's I admit to having it for most of my life, and even though there's no known cure for it, I still find that perfectly acceptable.

You go guy!

What you have is a copy of a Cavalry Carbine  better known has a Saddle Carbine which has the fittings to fasten  it to the saddle , most were rifled.

Feltwad,

It looks like a Paget carbine but the bore is wrong and it has a rear sight. I could not find any other carbine that has a 16 inch barrel and a 75 cal bore.

Do you think this is a copy of any specific gun or just a generic carbine?

Thanks for your help

I would say it is not a copy of a specific  gun but a one built to represent a Saddler Carbine with what was  available
