Made this shooting bag for a friend
« on: January 02, 2018, 07:45:23 AM »
My good friend, John Pruitt, made a couple rifles for my dad and me and asked me to make him a shooting bag as payment. I finally finished it yesterday. What is really special about this piece is that the body of the bag is made from the hide off the moose I killed with my longbow in 2015. The light brown dotted leather is ostrich hide and the colored leather is ostrich leg skin. The trim and fringe are deer hide and I carved the buttons out of the antlers off a buck I killed with my longbow. Everything was sewn by hand using artificial sinew. The bag has one external pocket and two internal pockets. I hope he likes it!

A shooting bag is on my list of accouterments to make and once again I am inspired. I figure if I reach for the stars, like these great examples, I'll get up out of the common mud of those last minute, thrown together, just good enough stuff that usually happens with a last minute deadline approaching.
 :bow
The trouble with doing things right the first time is no one realizes how hard it was.
Often, however, the following is more applicable.
I stand corrected, a position somewhat painful to achieve, but once there, is quite satisfying.

I would greatly suspect that last statement describes me to a "T".

I can say with almost certainty that I have never actually "planned" any accouterment I have ever made.
Perhaps a little thought went into the layout, but insofar as actually planning to do something on any given date or time, then gathering all the materials.....that has just never happened.

I suspect I will have to do better, if your work is any indication of what can happen once I climb out of the common mud, then I think a little prior planning has to be on the agenda....instead of; "Hey lookie what I found! I think I will make meself a doomaflitchie for my Black powder stuff".
Your work is outstanding. with your skills being remarkable.

Haven't been here in a while  :o

That is a beautiful piece of work! Did you tan the moose hide yourself? Wondered about doing that but that is some hard labor :)

Course, if I ever get to make my own bag, no way will I post now. I'm ashamed at my work just looking at that :)
