TC .50 cal Hawken
« on: June 16, 2019, 02:05:21 PM »
I have a friend that has asked me the relative value of a Thompson Center .50 cal. percussion cap Hawken. It looks in good shape, but I have no idea about used gun prices. Can someone give me some ballpark figures, or a price range?

I've seen used percussion TC Hawkens offered for sale, for $250.00 to $350.00,.... depending on condition.  :bl th up

Well, it has been a goodly time since I did any dealing in rifles, so I could be way off on this, confusing book values with real life, but here is what I got, taken from "Sixth Edition Blue Book of Modern Black Powder Arms", published in 2009.  Thompson Center Hawken Rifle (Discontinued 2004)

MSRP - $763
Grading 100% - $715
Grading 98%  -  $650
Grading 90%  -  $535
Grading 80%  -  $435

Frankly, that seems way proud to me, especially those prices in 2009.  But, I guess that was the economics of the day.  But golly, selling a new T/C then for $763???  That's a bit much, I would think.  I surely wouldn't pay that much for one, then or now.

I've seen TC Seneca's, and TC Cherokee's approaching the prices you have listed,.... but not TC Hawkens and TC Renegades.
Gun shows often reflect much lower value for the TC Hawken, and TC Renegade, than what "Blue Book" claims.

Gun shows (pretty much) reflect the "real life" (top-end) value placed on used guns for sale.  :bl th up

Gun show prices vary widely. I have seen TC rifles go for $250 but, in general, TC guns hold their value better. They are usually $350 or more. At least at the shows I run here in Central Michigan.

Thanks to one and all for sharing your knowledge about TC Hawken prices. I appreciate your help. Now I can give my friend some realistic figures to go by when he tries to sell that piece. I love having friends who are smarter than me :toast Sure makes my life easier :hairy

Prices are fickle from near zero to 400$. Avg Hawken sells for around 250$ if in avg condition. The bore and lock are the big attractions. If both are in really good shape you can get more money.

I do see quite a few locks rusted up on the inside as guys do not remove them to clean and lube.

Right now there is a flood of firearms and components for sale from all the guys who had to and didn't. So price and sell where you are comfortable.

Thanks, Bill. I haven't seen the piece yet, but will get a look at it next week. Really appreciate the good info.
