packable rifle rack
« on: July 01, 2019, 11:56:48 AM »
Here's a little project I just finished.

A friend had one of these at rendezvous recently and he allowed me to photo it so I might make one.

I like how it packs up for transport and storage.

I'm no master woodworker, but I recently re-built an old Craftsman table saw hoping to learn enough to build some useful items.

Planning to set this inside my tent to keep all the long guns from getting dinged up.

First, nice job! Next, where did you get the plans for the rack? If they are your invention, please draw up the plans and post them. That should be a standard piece of equipment for shooting outings where no facilities exist. Again, nice job.

Well, there weren't any plans and I didn't invent it.

You will need;
One 6 ft 1 x 12 - cut two pieces 26 inches long. for the top and bottom of the base.

One 8 ft 1 x 6  - cut into three pieces 24 inches long. For the two uprights and the top rack.  Cut two pieces 5 inches long for the hinged wings which attach the top rack to the side upright supports.

Two 6 ft 1 x 4s - cut two 24 inches long for braces from one.  Rip the remaining down the center for the sides on the base.

The hardware is:
4 brass hinges 1 x 3
2 draw tight latches
1 folding handle

two 2 inch and two 3 inch carriage bolts, washers and wing nuts.
ten 1 1/4 inch drywall screws.

I made the top rack to hold 10 long guns.  These notches were cut out with a jig saw.

One could easily adjust the dimensions larger or smaller.

This allows the support / attachment point to fold down for packing.

Steve, I am going to make this a sticky.
Not only is it a great idea but your tutorial on how to get the job done is very commendable.
Thank you for sharing the details.

I used that rack inside my little wedge tent at the RMNR.  It sat at the head of my bed and kept all my long guns out of the way.  No need to move them around and no risk of dinging them up.  I expect to be building a couple more before long.

What a terrific idea... :hairy
I am surprised that I haven't seen something like this before. If I had every a modicum of woodworking skill I think I would try replicating this. Hope yours turns out well! :bl th up
