Sometimes you gotta wonder
« on: January 06, 2020, 05:42:14 PM »
I sent out my Rice barrel to get jugg choked.  I asked that the wedding bands (2) be cleaned up and there was a tool score mark on the barrel.  I asked if he could clean that up "since it would take me a lot of time to sand it out by hand".  I also stated that if he couldn't not to worry i would do it by hand.
This is what I got back.  OUCH!!!
Not very historically correct.  Irreparable, I hope Rice has another in stock.  More $$

I'm going to give the guy a chance to make it right before I put his name out there.  His website states that he is a gun builder so I never thought that this is what he would do when i asked to "clean up the two wedding bands".  I had nicked them when I was filing the barrel so i thought he could just smooth them out for me.  A ten second job with some very fine sand paper, 400 or higher.  Much easier to make them clean while turning on a lathe.  Same with the tool mark just a little sandpaper when spinning on the lathe is what I asked for.  I hope he makes this right.  I had the barrel lugs soldered on, inletted and ready for pinning.  Now I'll have to purchase a new barrel, jugg choked from Rice and try to get three new lugs in the right spot on the barrel.  $250 for a new barrel plus shipping and jugg choking.  I don't know what Rice is charging to jugg choke the barrels but I'm in for another $400 most likely.
I was hoping to get this fowler completed this month.

Seems to me that the one that made the ill-advised changes may be footing most of that charge for a new barrel.

Danny Caywood refused to foot any of the bill for a new barrel.  He said it was only cosmetic and these bands are historically correct.  Hmmmm.  Has anyone see barrel bands on a New England fowler that look like these. I never asked him to change the barrel bands.  He said he was only trying fix Rice Barrel's mistakes.  He was quite abusive in his e-mails and refused to talk to me.  I will never do business with this guy again.  He even kept my check for jugg choking the barrel.

Hmmm,,,

On "Danny Caywood's" site, the picture of a Fowler (if you blow it up / magnify it) shows maybe 2 or (3 Rings maybe), but nothing like what he did to your barrel... :o

I just finished looking at - at least 50+ pictures of Fowlers, and I see nothing with that many Rings... He screwed up / plain and simple...
