Good day ,bad shooting

  I had a good day today as I got out with my new rifle again,burnt a whole horn of Goex!then shot a TMA bull and a Mike Fink target  [ Invalid Attachment ]  [ Invalid Attachment ]  never realized how challenging the Fink target could be! Then I designed and built a portable target stand,designed is a loose term but I did not copy any one design or it’s dimensions but there are others out there like it but I threw it together on my own out of my head with dimensions based on wood that I had ,it cost me 7.50 including hardware and weighs little needing only a piece of cardboard and a stapler to use. [ Invalid Attachment ]  [ Invalid Attachment ]  [ Invalid Attachment ]  [ Invalid Attachment ]  [ Invalid Attachment ] this is it and the simple tools I used except the chop saw.I need one because there is no 25 yard line on our range.
I also got my new .530 double cavity mold and poured my first hundred balls for the renegade-then I found my leather ball bag full of…guess what? .530 balls! I did burn some powder today and I seem to be getting more mileage from my flints I only used the one flint all day and sharpened it once and reset the flint once ,I will have too reconeuter and figure how many shots out of that horn,it’s small but more than sufficient for hunting. And I guess for target shooting( I never emptied it shooting before) but at a rondevous i probably would( never been to one) but I had a H£LL of a good time!

John, I like your stand idea. I like the idea of being able to post ol' Mike Fink at a more realistic height as if he was standing with that cup on top his head in front of you. 

I may just whip up a stand like that myself, and shoot the "old" Mike Fink Target since I have about 50 of the old targets. (Naturally I won't enter one), and that's okay.

I never thought much about it but I shoot a sporterrifle match each year and it is shot standing offhand at 50 ft so the targets have to be at about shoulder height as there is no artificial supports allowed such as slings ,adj. buttplate s,special stocks or wrist and hand supports,of course without them off hand is basically level,I thought I might do better as I am used to offhand shooting but the long muzzleloader barrel takes some practice to learn to control or not to control actually,I think I might do better with my Renegade it’s about 8” shorter   But I’ll keep working at this it might even make me better at sporterifle!
  The stand is also light and easy to packin a car and took me about an hour to make.local lumber dealer wanted almost $15 for a 2x4 !!! I had scrap but Lowe’s have them for $5 and there is always skids. Glad you liked it !Make it about 6” wider though. And be prepared on a windy day to wieigh the feet down!

I just remembered that I do have a tall target stand to hold the B18 target - that I built for 200 yard patch and ball shooting from long range, (200 yards)... So I expect I'll use that.

  That’s a long shot ,I’d appreciate that shoot, our range is only 100 yds,though  whatrifle,what caliber how was it scored? Was it with iron sights?

I am fortunate to have 25, 50, and 100 yard ranges at my gun club with nice plywood on 4X4 frames and that is what I use most of the time. I have tried the wood and the wood + PVC target stands but for most shooting I don't find them worth the setup and schlepping to and from the range. I also do a lot of defensive pistol shooting and plinking at shorter distances and this is by far the easiest to set up and use. and IIRC, costs about $2 each.  My fav is electric fence posts made of plastic and they can be found at Tractor Supply. While the height isn't optimal for 'Ol Mike Fink, the backer can be adjusted for height. A bonus is that there is a lip to stand on to jab it in the ground, and if you don't stick it down too far, to remove, just hook the toe of your shoe under it and pull up.

  That’s a long shot ,I’d appreciate that shoot, our range is only 100 yds,though  whatrifle,what caliber how was it scored? Was it with iron sights?

We use to shoot at a 24 inch gong at 200 yards and a hit was obviously 1 point. Then we start using the B-18 from (150, and 200 yards) and we'd score that the same as a gong - just 1 point no matter which Scoring Ring or outer part of the target paper boarder you might hit. We finally went back to the gong since it gave "delayed" feed back. It was hard to pick up the ball hole in the all black B18 target.

Anyway, some used a .40, some a .45, some a .50, and some used a .54... Strangely, the .40 and .45's had the best luck on the gong and B18 targets at the ranges we shot... This is not saying that the two smaller calibers are better for this - it just happened that way as only myself and the late Jim Potter, we actually practiced our shooting weekly - not once a month.
 
Lets face it, after 100 yards there's a large portion of luck involved.  And yes, all of us only used opened iron sights. No scopes or peep were allowed.
