I'm ashamed to admit how much.
$40/lb. It is Goex Express but I don't know how much difference that makes.

Back in the summer I scored three lbs of Goex from a friend.  And just before that I ordered 6 lbs of Graf's.  Just made it under the wire I guess.

If someone  could develop  a black powder substitute  that actually  SMELLED  like black powder, they'd make a fortune.

I just wish there was a BP substitute that would work in a flint lock.  I know you can use duplex loads, but that is a real pinta.  I hope my supply of real BP will hold me over until thing get more sane.

Why not just use REAL BLACK POWDER?

What is y'all's problem????

GET IT NOW while you (and everyone else) can still get it via mail order and be done with it.

Stock up!

My thinking is just the opposite when it comes to real Black Powder & the Substitutes.

I'd rather see people use real "Black Powder" in their Muzzle Loaders and Black Powder Cartridge Rifles - thereby enhancing the Black Powder market - and eliminating the competition of Black Powder Substitutes all together. Were this the case, the supply and demand would be the incentive to keep a steady supply of Black Powder on the market.  :shake

Spot on Joe!  :hairy

Black powder lasts FOREVER, too - unlike smokeless.  Gunpowder found in that loaded cannon in NYC Central Park was just as good that day as it was 200 years ago.

Two great things are accomplished by buying/using real black powder - demand insures manufacture, and increased demand can spur competition and better pricing.

Friends ,  I REALLY hope you're  right, but the closure of ĢOEX and scarcity of our REAL black powder scares me no end. Add to that, the substitutes are back on the shelves already. $40 a pound real black powder might become the new normal. :scared:

Price increases have always been a plague on every hobby and pastime we do.

I remember the days when I could go into EJ Griffiths little gun shop, and pick up a pound of "Goex, 100 Balls ,100 patches, and a tin of caps" all for under a $10.00 bill back in the latter 70's... However, since this is my most enjoyable hobby - I've excepted those (over the years) price increases...

Not saying I like the increases, but increases will always be part of the interests we take part in.  :shake

Folks, y'all gotta start thinking about what matters most in yer trad muzzleloader interests, what that will matter for components, and what that means to you today, next year, and maybe at least a few years down the road.

Are ya interests in the category of newbie, or casual, and/or hooked for life?  Wherever you fit in that list, yer gonna need powder - either black powder or sub powder, or both, along with ignition primers of caps and/or flints, along with pure lead (for casters - which is THE way to go rather than buy balls).

Right now, for percussion guns, the big issue will caps, and for flinters it's black powder.  This is not to say that sub powder or flints or lead won't also be a concern right now, or even a few months down the road.

Plan ahead.  If you only go through a pound - or less! - of whatever flavor powder in a year, it will still pay to buy enough for at least a few years minimum.  Dittos for caps, flint, and lead.

The current savings on a 25lb carton of black powder is pretty good at less than $22 or $24 per pound, delivered with all shipping and hazmat fees included.  Some vendors such as - www.addictedtoblackpowder.com - will allow a 25lb case of mixed brands and powder granularities.

Check for folks in your area who are up for a group buy.  If there's any left over, it won't be wasted!
