Rendezvous camp chair
« on: May 24, 2022, 08:41:00 AM »
My chair gave out at muddy run and it’s beyond repair. I don’t feel like reverse engineering it and making one. I’m looking for a new one. Anyone know where I can find a period or camp correct chair that has a laid back feel but folds away and fits in the small trailer? Thanks

Look for what is known as a director's chair. They date back to Roman origins, and were used by Napoleon. Comfortable, and much more authentic to the period than the wood atrocities many use. I have had good luck finding them at second hand stores, and Facebook Marketplace.

I have 2 that are made like this:  https://bigsawproductions.com/cedar-wood-outdoor-camp-chairs.html   They are pretty easy to make if you have a little time on your hands. Seat and back come apart and the seat slides into the back. Great for packing them up and transporting.  Not difficult to make if you have a little time on your hands.  Can be made with straight timber. Pretty comfortable too.

What Butler is showing in the "Link" above is what many of us use and for the reasons mentioned.

Not at all authentic.

Unless it was made pre 1840, they ain't nothing at today's Rendezvous that qualifies as authentic.

Okay, so the directors chair can be documented to the period. The chairs you guys like date to the 1930's. I guess they must be swell though, since they are made of wood. Wonderful criteria for being period correct.

Perhaps not dated but qualify for the "camp correct" choice.

Thanks for the ideas. I’ve seen those folding chairs at the rondys and think I’ll pick one up. I also found a high back Windsor rocking chair from an antique store. Not as easy to pack but easy on the back. Thanks for the help.

A period-looking break-down rondy chair can be made in a few minutes with a saw & a wood plank

Some folks refer to those as Viking Chairs.  :)
