New to me pistol
« on: February 05, 2023, 09:40:38 AM »
  [ Invalid Attachment ]
A member of my new ML club passed on right about the time I joined,  Duane church aka church mouse.
The gentleman helping with the widows affairs offered me first choice of Duane's smokepoles and pistols.
This was my choice, lyman .54 cal.
Don't know much about pistols, never shot one infact, but I need to learn for rendezvous etc.
If anyone has words of wisdom on handguns I'd be much obliged.

Good on ya, Kevin.
I've known Duane since the last of the 70's.  He was a great guy and an incredible craftsman.
To have one of his pistols is indeed an honor.
I have always liked Lyman firearms.  They are good, solid, fine shooting weapons.  If it were me, I would treasure it forever.
Next time I make it up to Idaho for rendezvous, we will have to have a little shooting match between our two Lyman pistols.

:hairy Nice, did the pistol come with any load info? I have an old October Country bag that belonged to one of the founders of our club that I purchased from the estate 22 years ago, have been using it since then and although I never meet the man, I know all the campfire stories of him and it makes me think of him every time I put it on, now if I only knew a guy who was a leather worker and could make me a new bag so i could retire this one. ::)

I sure hope percussion caps become more readily available so you can have some fun with that thing. I'm sorry I can't help you because I don't have one of those, but I'd sure like to have one. Someone will be along shortly with so much information it will make your head spin.

Well, according to an old 1997 DGW Catalog; the Lyman Pistol load projection's are;

.008 depth rifling w/ 1 in 30 Twist;

.50 - 30 gr. 3fg w/ .015 patch & .490 ball

.54 - 40 gr. 3fg w/ .015 patch & .530 ball

Bottom line is that you'll still have to find your best load that works for you... It could be more (and I doubt less) powder / as well as "patch thickness" & if a .495 ball is better than a .490 / and a .535 ball is better than a .530???

Just have to do some testing with what you have.  :bl th up

Hey Beav,
I got a pretty nice bag from some whacked out hippie sort from Washington a few years ago.  You might check with him about making a bag for you.  Wish I could recollect his name, I could put you in contact with him. :luff: :luff:
Hmmm, I was thinking I might even sell it to you, but nah, it's a keeper, and that's final.

No info came with this ol gal.
I notice there is only a S/N on the barrel, no other markings or proofs .
I indeed felt a sense of honor when receiving this.
 Keeping it in the club..
John, I plan on making a few rondys this yr, looking forward to meeting.
Beaver man, post a pic of the bag you have to replace, dimensions, maybe I can help. No guarantees but I have been making some basic shooting bags.
As for #11 caps, I now have just over 1000 so that oughta get me thru 1 rendezvous season.
Hopefully start shooting soon, snow is melting.
Thanks all for responding

Kevin, I thought maybe I had given you a wrong  phone # since  Pedersoli  bought Lyman. So this morning I tried the #. After a short wait I did speak to a representative. So I think you will be able to get a User's Guide. In the meantime, I'll share any info out of my guide with you.Just let me know.

Kevin, thanks for the offer on a bag I just finished bag #137 for a friend, I have the cobblers kids with no shoes problem, every time I make one for me and start to carry it somebody wants to buy it off my shoulder, I tell them it's not for sale and they offer me stupid $ for it and well, $ talks, so that why I've been using this old bag that Bigsmoke made probably 35 years ago or more!

On another note, have you tried searching for the Lyman owners manual on line?

Pedersoli bought Lyman?  When did THIS occur, and why didn't somebody tell me?

I could have given you the wrong info. But in the Jan/Feb 2021 issue of Muzzleloader magazine there is an article showing the new GPR rifle made by Pedersoli. I hope someone can chime in and shed some light on this information. Winter Hawk I'm sorry if I led you astray.

My deepest apologies to Winter Hawk and anyone else, considering my comment regarding about Lyman selling out.
When I read the article in the Jan/Feb 2021 issue of Muzzleloader magazine, apparently I got things mixed up. I will
try to never let that happen again.
