I have been playing around here the last couple of weeks, looking for something simple to build as a getaway from working on the screw tip and the applied tip horns that have occupied me for this year so far.
I believe I have something here that will work, it is pretty simple and easily repeatable. Here is a shot of the left side of the horn.

The baseplug is made out of a single piece of maple. It is not drilled out but it is left solid. Personally, I feel that especially with a horn this size, the difference that makes in weight is rather a moot point. The baseplug is affixed with a ring of hot glue, which not only holds it in place, it also assures an air and water tight seal. For decorative purposes, there are also eight birch pegs securing the plug in place.
I did not want to lathe turn a finial onto the baseplug, so I decided to use a sling swivel stud with a formed brass ring. If I make further horns like this, I will probably use a small key ring instead. I think my soldering ability and skill level actually detracts from the overall feeling of the horn.
