Darren Does it Again!
« on: March 01, 2025, 06:49:50 PM »
The Traditional Bowhunter magazine arrived yesterday, and I saw a very familiar author in the table of contents!  A how-to for building an inexpensive PVC kids' bow (and arrows).  Another "well done" to Darren! :yessir:

Well, now, there is more than one published author in this group.
In years gone by, I did write a story about my buffalo hunt for the Dixie Gun Works Annual.  I used to write a column for the Alliance Voice, a publication for gun dealers;  obviously, I wrote the muzzleloading column.  And in 1989 and 1990, Ms. Smoke and I self published The Buyers Guide to Muzzleloading Shops and Products.  Sorry to say, it never made the New York Times Best Sellers List, but it did OK for itself.
Funny story about that book.  It was probably in 1990 we were at the SHOT Show and I happened to be looking at the Colt Black Powder booth.  I overheard the follow who owned GOEX and the fellow who owned Colt BP talking.  They were lamenting the thought that there was no listing of gun shops that handled black powder.   "Au contraire, mon ami", there is, and I wrote it.  They were amazed.
IIRC, I think I had a few one time articles published in the magazine that came out of Big Timber, MT.  What was its name?  Sorry to say, I haven't been the least bit active writing in the last 25 years or so.

Well John I do apologize for my ignorance.
What year did you write that article.
I have a small stack of DGW annuals from 1989 to 2004 or so
I'd like to read it if I have it.

No apology necessary.
The Dixie Annual was the 2003 one.  It has a photo of a buffalo hunter on a horse and is titled the Great American Buffalo Hunt.  It tied into the rifle I used, The Great American Sporting Rifle (in 12 bore).
Gee, I really miss that rifle, but I sold it to a friend.  At least I get visiting privileges.  Also got to shoot it at the Moscow RDV several years ago.  It was good to make its acquaintance again.

At this point, I want to apologize to Darren for hijacking a thread that was supposed to be about his writings.  I must say he is a much more talented writer than I.
Interesting thought, though.  Maybe 25 or 30 years ago, I had the thought that when I retired it would be a fun idea to travel around and attend various rendezvous and write about them.  I felt that there would be a market for that story line , either with Muzzle Blasts or with Muzzleloader magazine.  Obviously, that never happened, life got in the way and by the time I really retired I just didn't feel like doing that anymore.  But I am not dead yet, so who knows what might happen.

While shooting at the gun club I belong to last Tuesday evening, I noticed the March edition of Fur Fish and Game laying on the counter. Inside I found the turkey hunt article by Darren. I figured I'd let it sit there for a week or two, and then bring it home to read it. If it's still there tonight, it's coming home with No Powder. I'm sure it will be another fine article by Darren.

Kevin, Don't just stop with my story, there are a lot of other good articles in that book as well.
