What are you paying for eggs?
« on: March 02, 2025, 11:21:10 AM »
I guess it is from the Avian Flu, but prices on eggs seem to be skyrocketing all over the place.  I think I have heard that Kalifornia has the highest sales price in the nation.  If not, I feel for the places that have higher prices.
For example, I went shopping last Thursday in Morro Bay and found the following.
At the Farmers' Market, the fellow who sells eggs sold out at  $12.99 a dozen.
In the store itself, Traficanda eggs were $10.99 per dozen but Eggland Best were only $7.99, but they were sold out.  Cal Poly (the local college) eggs were $12.99.
On the bright side, Costco in San Luis Obispo was selling eggs for I think it was $9.95 for a 2 dozen flat, with a limit of 3 flats at a time.  But restaurants were able to come in and buy an unlimited quantity.  They were walking out of the store with 20 or 30 flats of eggs, totally filling the standard shopping carts. Others were using the big flat carts.  I would imagine Costco was out of eggs by the end of the day.
So, what are egg prices where you live?

Nothing, we have 20 hens and were getting 12 to 14 large eggs a day, that will increase as things warm up, we take the excess down to our local feed store and trade them at 6 bx a dozen for layer mash and straw for the coop, so the hens easily pay for themselves, the feed store sells them for 10 bux a dozen.

Oof! I just paid $6 for a dozen of Walmart's eggs here in Athens, OH. Last week I got a dozen "happy chicken" eggs* at Kroger's for $4.84.  The local TV repair guy sells eggs from his wife's chickens at $4/dozen.

It's the government's decision to kill off all the chickens which may have had contact with the bird flu virus, and I don't know how many millions have been "euthanized".  Can't blame it on Biden this time though!  I'm just glad they didn't do the same to Covid-19 sufferers.   :laffing

Lucky enough to have 14 hens. That may change in the future but for now glad to have them.
I've seen anywhere from 7$ to over 12$ for a dz depending on type I suppose.
