A Horn in a Hurry

A month or so ago, I bought a batch of half finished powder horns.
Today, I decided I needed a horn to carry Fg powder in and I didn't want to drill out one of my good horns for that purpose.
So, there was a horn that had been started with a  Treso brass pour spout in it, engrailed, and did not have a baseplug installed.
Well, the pour spout would do the job just fine, but I am not much of a fan of engrailed horns so I sanded that off, and I wanted to just have a flat walnut baseplug on it with a staple for the strap.
Here is how it turned out.  I guess I should have taken a before photo of it, but I was in a hurry.







Not the best work I have ever done, but probably not the worst, either.  Regardless, it will do just fine.

Quite honestly, the horn photographed better than it actually is.
But, who knows, I might even sell it at one of the rendezvous I am planning on attending.
Or not. 
We'll see when it happens.  I really don't have any emotional attachment to it.

I think the horn is attractive and rather traditional.  It certainly beats the horn (on the left) that I made long ago.  Of course anything I make is on the "crude side".  The horn on the right already had the baseplate installed when I bought it.


I made this one from a piece of bamboo.  It actually does work for powder or shot.  The red ball visible on the short-starter is actually a vent pick inserted in the antler.

Considering that I am using a cheap horn I bought from The Gunworks in 1986 and am still using, those all look dandy!

Gosh, Kees, I think I was selling horns to Joe and Suzi back in 1986.  Wonder if it was one of mine?
Probably not, as my horns were never expensive but more than the imports.

I believe it was an import, all I could afford at the time.  I got a brass pour spout and a screw on "button" for the plug from Dixie for it later.  Recently put a staple in the plug for the strap so it rides better.

I actually received a very nice horn from Rondo in our Christmas gift exchange a number of years back and should be using it, but a friend needed to be set up for muzzle loading so I gave it to him, along with a T-C Hawken, and other accoutrements.
