I have restored several originals of these pistols, the early ones were mostly side lock percussion and came in 12 and 14 gage. The later ones were built with back action percussion locks and the common gage was also 12 and 14.All were sxs with barrels of 8 to 10 inches some were smooth bore but some were rifled.
They were mainly used by officers in the cavalry and were carried in holsters on the side of the saddle ,these pistols were often refer-ed too as Man Stoppers
Howdah pistols were also carried by big game hunters for dispatching of wounded game.these were mostly rifled.
