A few weeks ago, Many Voices, turned me onto a book about David Thompson. 8) (Thank you Karen !!!!)
The Book = David Thompson, The Saleesh House period 1807-1812

By Carl W. Haywood ( NOTE - this man has unique qualifications to bring to the "table) He spent his life as a Forester, survayer & Hunting guide as well as a LOVE & Passion for the subject.

1. As the "Title" states, this book "centers" on The NWC post = The Salish House.
A. This post was one of the first DAVID THOMPSON ( DT ) established W of the Rockie Mountains.
B. This post was DT's "center of operations" for the time He was involved in the Fur Trade W of the Rockies. ( Both as an Explorer & Wintering Partner ( NWC)
2. CONTENTS - (This is my poor attempt to briefly recap)
A. The Establishment IMPORTANCE & Usage of this Post, during the 5 years DT did His AWESOME work in the PNW.
B. An ATTEMPT to retrace,the routes DT followed in the NE corner of the PNW, using the Saleesh house as the CENTRAL starting place ( NE WA, N ID, NW MT & SE BC ).
C. TREMENDOUS insights as to the Daily RIGORS confronted, by these stalwart men.
D. An ATTEMPT to locate accurately the actual location of this Post.
NOTE, both the ACCURATE retracing of the routes & Location, is VERY DIFFICULT & Mr. Haywood HONESTLY, not only addresses the problems, but HONESTLY offers His conclusions NOT as FACT, but as an educated offering for future Discussion.
Final Thoughts =
1. A book that NEEDS to be in the library of anyone who has an interest in the "early days" of the Fur Trade" in the PNW.
2. IMHO, Mr. Haywood, has done a FANTASTIC job of presentation. ( not only His research, but the way He brings to LIFE the life of these men. ( he De myths the glamor of being a Fur Trader ( whether a " Partner or a lowly employee. Extreme work with Little or NO food, Horrendous weather conditions, Poor living conditions ETC.)
