Title: War Club Opinion

Hey guy's, I need your opinions and input on something. I am going to try and get out this week to find myself a decent tree with a root ball and small trunk in order to try and make myself a war club.
I know that at this time of year the sap has run down the tree. My question is this. Saying that I find a suitable tree, how long should I let it dry out before starting to carve on it. Any and all advise would be appreciated. Thank's.

allow 1 year per inch or thickness of the wood if your going to naturally dry it, if you have a saw mill near by, you can get them to kiln dri it for you, problem with that is you take the chance of cracking the root, best to let it dry natural

seal the cut end(s) with white glue or a couple coats of paint. This will reduce checking as the wood dries.
