O.K. all the bits and pieces finally came in so here's what I've got for 1811 Astoria. Since I've got time, I'm going to try and put together a clerk's hat before September but this is what I've got for now. The puppy was helping. He also tied the cravat for me. I'll make him do a better job next time.

In the tradition of the GPNW the answer is "both". Figure I'm one of 12 clerks that came over on the Tonquin (even though I'm too old to be any of 'em) and stayed on when the post was sold (or captured depending on your point of view).
Keeps me in the 1810's and coming by ship means my clothes aren't all beat to hell and neither am I.

As a retired Naval Officer I no longer do swords. They are a royal pain in the arse. Give me a pistol and an Arkansas toothpick.

Yep can ID. (US Army, + carry for re-enacting.)
BUT, a Sword was carried ( esp. by NWC/HBC in you "pay grade" = required load out )
