Title: a family reunion
Post by: faithtreker on October 30, 2011, 08:42:21 AM
Yesterday, our Longhunter Group who portray Robert Crockett , was asked to
be honor guard for a grave marker dedication for Mat Cowen. Mat was with Andy Jackson in New Orleans. The part that was exciting for us was that his
father was Ned Cowen[longhunter] who came into this area with Crockett and Mansker. Several members of his family were there for the event and it got us
to thinking. We are always looking for a way to promote longhunter history, so why not a "Longhunter Family  Reunion"? We plan to invite any decendents of the men who came in with that now infamous group for a reunion sometime next year. Naturally any longhunter reenactors will be welcome, and we will plan some great events! Now back to yesterday. Mat's grave is in a large valley with hills all around. The leaves are in full color and it was beautiful.
When we were instructed to fire our flinters, it was almost like a trip back through history. When the smoke cleared I almost expected to see a fallen buffalo carcass. You see that valley where Ol Ned settled is still called Buffalo Valley.
